Default Garage door high beams

Could someone tell me how they hooked up there garage door to there high beams? I know one or two people have done this. Just not sure how to wire it. Although I have an idea.

If your garage remote is 12v, you're in luck. Just solder some 30 gauge wire to the contacts where the switch is so it's always closed. Solder wires to the negative and positive battery contacts. With the high beams, I can't remember...but I think you have to connect the negative from the remote to the high beam wire and the positive to the ground because of how it draws power. That's the best way to do that...

If you have a 9v remote, you can either do the same thing and use a resistor of some sort (I don't know how many ohms...I'm an Arts major), or you can use the battery and just wire a automotive relay (12v) to the switch contacts. Then, t-tap the relay to the highbeam/ground.

After you wire it up and test it, you can either put it in a baggy of some sort or tape it up. I suggest you use a voltage meter to double check the voltages. Also, remember to have enough wire so you can mount the remote wherever you want. I have mine above my passenger headlight in my xA.

If you have any questions, pm me or post the question here...

My parents both have homelinks built into their vehicles. I was using a garage remote for the security gate at the entrance of my community. I hated it. It looks so...lame. :D So took it in the house, tested it with my volt meter, soldered some wires. I tested it on an old 12v psu. Taped it up (for weather proofing), then t-tapped it into my passenger high beam. I flash my high beam at the gate and open sesame! I've seen others behind me try to open it by flashing their high beams...but no cigar

It's a convenience VIP mod... :D

I justed added this mod to my xA. It's sweet! Took me awhile though. I wanted to use the SkyLink Universal remote because that uses a 12v battery. Would have been a lot easier. Problem was, no one around here carried the particular model that I needed for my garage door opener. So I had to settle for using a remote with a 9v battery. I had to solder a 560 ohm resistor in line with the power supply to cut the voltage down, but it works great!

BTW, thanks mikochu for doing the legwork and finding the voltages on the headlight wires. You made my install go A LOT easier! :D

wha? do it for who? My parents have high powered homelinks. My dad can open the gate from like 100 yards away. I'm gonna mod my sister's into her Accord, though...

No I understood what you were doing, just not understanding how it got done and how it works. I don't understand exactly how to wire it up and once it is wired for flashing the high beams would work the same as hitting the little button.

This could also be done with a gate AND a garage door opener. My entry gate is about 100 yds from my garage door, so they don't interfere.

Iy you drive with your brights on, does this mean that you're transmitting constantly?

Yup, I have quick disconnects, so I can take off the transmitter...but I just leave it in there. I use my brights with the transmitter to test the integrity...

Mikochu, can you try explaining how to do this just one more time? Maybe I can understand it better if I hear it again in a slightly different way. Thanks.
