How to hardwire your radar detector
 

Well, I am somewhat of an addict on this site ever since I got my Box. I have gotten many ideas of what to do to personalize mine. But there is one thing I seem to notice when I look at rides. Radar detectors and their wires hanging off the dash and going to the cigarette lighter. Well I want to contribute a bit and show you guys a nice little trick I learned on my Honda.

First off, the usual disclaimer. I am not responsible if you blow up your box during this install. Although that is extremely unlikely. If you want to try this you are doing so on your own.

I have no pictures for this install but they are not really necessary. This little trick can be used for any car.

Parts Necessary (All can be found at your local Radio Shack):

1) Power cord (what ever length you need)

2) Adaptaplug (will plug from your radar detector to the wire)

3) Inline fuse holder

When you go to Radio Shack to pick these up take your detector and the power cord you use for the cigarette lighter. With these they can help you choose the right Adaptaplug and the polarity you need to use for the Adaptaplug.

What to do:

1) Cut off one end of the power cord and split the cord to the respective polarities.

2) Connect the inline fuse holder to the positive side of the cord. This will be the side that is not solid black.

3) On the other side of the inline fuse holder connect a spade-tongue terminal.

4) Plug in the spade-tongue terminal to an available fuse in the fuse box. For those of you who have the xB, like me, I used the upper left empty fuse holder.

5) Ground the other end of the wire. It's very important to ground this part of the wire correctly. Just touching it to a grounded area, for testing purposes won't work.

6) Turn on the ignition and plug in your new power cord to the detector. Don't forget the fuse. I just used the one in the cegarette adapter.

7) Run the wire to where you want your detector and your'e done!

Now, if you used the right fuse holder your detector will turn on when you turn the key to acc and turn off when you take the key out of the ignition.

I got my radar detector back in September which is a Beltronics Vector 995 ( awesome detector ) and Beltronics also offers direct wire kits for their detectors and I can vouch that direct wireing on a radar detector make everything look nice a neat!.

Added note make sure your detector is a 12 volt input if it is any lower you will burn it out :doh:

Mine is hardwired thru the headliner, and connected to the laser jammer with a wire running down thru the passenger c pillar

Cool set up Duker! I saw it on another post about radar detectors. I do have a quick question though. Aren't you worried about not having any coverage behind you due to the radar detector being bhind your rear view mirror?

Radar detector is just slightly below the mirror, and in the back I have more laser countermeasures
