I think the Factory forgot the Cabin Air Filter..
I recently acquired my Scion from my uncle and he says he never touched the cabin air filter.
Yet, when I went to check it there was one installed.
Looking at how dirty the filter holder is I believe the factory never put one in.
Has anyone else experienced this?

So, they all had the tray to hold the filter but none actually came with the filter installed?
Mine has the filter holder/tray and the replacement filter for this tray is readily available at the parts store.
I think I'll clean out all the dirt in the system that I can get to before putting the new filter in.

I use to work at a Toyota dealer, when we did the pre delivery inspection, the Scions never came w a cabin air filter for some reason, probably due to the pricing, we couldn't even get discounts on cars.

I pulled out the blower motor and looked at the AC evaporator coils with a mirror and flashlight.
There was significant dust buildup partially clogging it.
I got in there with a vacuum and it's much better now, though not completely clean.
I will install a cabin filter this weekend to prevent a re-occurance.
While I don't really care about the air coming in being filtered I do care about the air system getting clogged with dirt.

Picture and a story
This is sort of relevant, isn't it?
I went to a repair shop near me called West Miramar Automotive & Transmission (San Diego CA). (I had drip on my driveway)
They offered to do a "Free" 40 point inspection. This included taking out the Cabin Air Filter and taking a picture.
The picture showed a lot of loose leaf debris on the dirty filter. They offered to replace it for $45 labor, $21.95 Parts.
I declined (I consented only to the work that was "covered" by a warranty I had, but they had to charge more than the covered
cost due to their convenient location I presume)(warranty did NOT cover the drip, BTW).
I get the car back, and take out the filter, and all the loose leaf debris is right there waiting for me!
Guess that's just how they roll!

my picture after I got the car back
I wonder if they were extra careful not to accidentally spill any in the remove and replace steps?

Looks like previous owner took care of this for me..........back in 2005? The filter was in there but was nasty AF and appeared to be more than decade old. Guess it was better than none for that long. I took cowl off and put aluminum screen over fresh air inlets as well to keep anything other than dust off the new filter that went in.

Just some ground wire kit I had laying around on the Mazda P5 parts rack new in box not being used so I decided to use it here. Grounds passenger side body by strut, head, alternator, tb, firewall and connects to battery ground on radiator support. Basically placebo effect to some, magically smoothing to others. Taking up space under the hood instead of on the parts rack for sure is undisputable. Same thing for bag of blue acorn lug nuts.....new, not being used so I went for lipstick on a pig for my ugly rims that need to be redone in place of the chunks of krusty bs that were there when I bought the thing. For time being removed the black strip around the lip as well so it doesn't look like I have white striped tires.............
