With the design of the xB the way it is, what is the best type of enclosure?

1. Closed
2. Ported
3. Bandpass

I am gonna buy my box soon, and I am just wondering what you experienced sound techies think?

It's been years since I've done sound, but at least in my day, I'd go with sealed. It's a tighter less noisy sound, and the xB being trunkless will transmit any noise up since there's nothing to baffle it out.

 

From what I understand (I could be mistaken but have been told this by a few audio people) bandpass gives you the best bang for you buck. It gives a bit deeper base as opposed to ported or sealed.

 

Bandpass or ported are gonna give you more bass, but it'll be sloppy. Sealed gives you nice tight bass but it doesn't hit quite as hard. It all depends on what you listen to most. If you listen to a lot of rock, then definately go sealed. Rap or Tecno, the choice is really up to you. I have always rocked sealed boxes because I prefer quality over quantity and sealed boxes just sound cleaner!

 

Are aesthetics an issue? Unless you plan on damping the interior, I think a bandpass or ported enclosure will be too "boomy" for an xB. You might consider an isobaric.

ported if you want more boom like they say. i think i'm gunna port mine cuz while the bass is extremely clear, it doesn't it as hard as i'd like

 

I plan in using sone Dynomat as needed, but I really just want tight bass. If I need a sealed box to do that then thats good. I thought a bandpass box had crisper and tighter bass?

Sealed boxes have the tightest bass.

Alrighty first all three boxes will work. Your needs are the most important
as far as a box goes. First how much space do u wish to give up, Second how loud
do you want to be and Third what kind of speakers(brand and sizes). Now that we have that down lets look at what differant boxes will do. Sealed boxes will play
loud and handle more power, and some say more musical. Next a ported box will
give you more out put with less power in most cases, most hardcore spl people use
ported boxes. Some ported boxes will some times have port noise kinda like a whistle noise from the port. In my own xb i fun a single 10" in a ported box.
Now on to bandpass boxes first i will say a properly built bandpass will perform
as well in sq as any other box only problem would be size. MOST PRE BUILT BANDPASS SUCK other than some of the ones built buy the speaker manuf.
JL audio had some good bandpass boxes as did aluma pro.

The best advice i can give you is go and listen with your own ears PERIOD
if you dont like it dont buy it!!!! And dont let some sales guy get you . Only get what you like.

Oh yea issobaric this used to be a great way to get more woofers in a car , but with how small a box most need this is not a good choice

It may depend on the sub. Some subs are designed specifically for small sealed enclosures.........and some for big fat ported enclosures. But.....in general..........a ported box will give you louder, more "boomy" bass. With a sealed enclosure.......you'll get tighter, snappier bass, with a bit of a decrease in SPL. However, another benefit of sealed is that you can usually get away with smaller enclosures, and the sealed design helps reduce excursion on the sub, and prolong the life of the speaker. Sealed boxes are also cheaper and easier to build. I'd say.........for regular listening......go sealed. If you're joining SPL competitions.......or are just one of those guys that can't get enough bass (Mark....i'm looking in your direction ) then go with a ported or bandpass enclosure.

Unfortunately, speaker building with the intent of linear response is a bit more involved than speaker building for max. SPL (sound pressure level) at 20Hz. For instance, choosing a proper driver(s) requires knowledge and interpretation of what are known as Thiele-Small Parameters (electromechanical properties of a speaker driver:

I don't mean to dissuade you from undertaking a sub project , just that there's more to it than slapping a driver in a box.

 

I appreciate the input RJ, and actually I have the drivers, I wanna slap a box around them!!! So I guess I need to do some reading. Do you have a quick answer for me though?

I have a Backwave box from The Woodshop, a local competition company. That is a stock picture of it below. I am running two of their Texas Baase Subs (also below) with an MTX 8100D Amp, let's just say, it hits Hard!!

Now as far as quality w/ the music, It sounds pretty good. It isn't the cleanest thing on earth, but it is tight to a point. It does peak at some points, which is the major problem with ported enclosures, but other than that, it is awesome.

Definitely worth looking into.
