ABS
 

1st Gen xB - Three warning lights on the dash appear when a failed ABS sensor is detected. Garage guy chased it to the LR sensor - no further checking done. How is the upstream circuit tested when the ABS sensor is disconnected?
How is the ABS sensor tested? How is the wheel sensor disc exchanged, if the previous two tests are positive? My garage guy says it might be easier to exchange the wheel bearing/housing instead of exchanging the moving sensor (the internal disc).

Ideas?

What did the garage guy do to narrow it down to the left rear sensor?

The sensor itself does appear to be a serviceable part but an original Toyota part is going to set you back $100+ and the cheapest one on RockAuto is $72.00. You'd be far better off replacing the entire assembly as you can get an entire rear wheel hub with included ABS sensor from either SKF or Timken for $100 and a side benefit would be new wheel bearings.

Thanks for the reply. I don't know how it was determined that the LH Rear sensor was at fault, other than a scan. But my garage guy did say that the replacement wheel hub would be a better choice that trying to repair what's in there. so I'll agree with you there. How can the ABS system be checked by the average joe? Metering? Checking wiring certainly. Anything more complex is better tested at the mechanic shop? Toyota?
