DIY brake pad change?
I don't think so. I'm just not strong enough to do it by hand i guess.

The clamp can't be left in place while installing the caliper with new pads so i assume it's used just to push back the cylinder and not to hold it in place. Is this correct?

You can either catch the edge or go for the center of it, whatever works best for the clamp you are using. Then, just tighten until it is flush with the caliper housing. Once you have everything back together, a few pumps of your brake pedal should get everything adjusted, then it's just a matter of getting the pads properly bedded with the rotors.
FYI, I recently replaced the pad on bot my xA and my girl's with Satisfied Pro VS OEM pads. Very inexpensive($27), quiet, and offer some nice stopping power with the factory rotors.

when i put the new pads in i just pushed the pads in and put the caliper back on double checked after i bolted it back on to see that the pads werent touching the rotor and everything looked ok.
