Default A few lessons from first brake job: first timers please read!

One finds some informative instructions on replacement of pads and rotors for the first gen xa/xb around the net

I consulted

http://www.clubxb.com/forums/showthread.php?t=31253

and

Unfortunately, both are somewhat incomplete.

The first instructs you to take off the entire caliper assembly--the caliper cylinder and the frame that the caliper cylinder is attached to. This is done by removing two 17mm bolts. One can change the rotors when this is done. But, I found it difficult to replace the pads doing this. Also, these instructions omit a) if you use aftermarket pads such as the Wagner ceramic platniums you do not need to use any of the original shims and spacers. Nor do you need to paint them. Just use the pads as they come out of the box. b) it also ignores the fact that you need to put a bit of grease on the spring clips you will (barely) see in the caliper assembly after removing the pads, and c. it omits the fact that you ought to grease the slider pins on which the cylinder is guided.

I found it nearly impossible to properly seat the pads with this method, due to the clips and the lack of lubrication of same. However removal of the entire caliper assembly is necessary to change the rotors.

The second set is a good set to just change the pads. It is clear and to the point. Further, it shows you how to remove just the cylinder by removing two 14mm bolts. This provides easier access to remove and to replace the pads, and also to grease the clip that helps hold the pads in the assembly. With this, reseating the new pads is a snap. But, these instructions too do not bother to tell you to grease the clip where the "dog ears" on both sides of the pad go in to, nor does it tell you to take off the pin with the rubber boots and grease the slider pins for the caliper. This last step is easily done with just the cylinder is off. The pins with their boots just slide out from where the 14 mm bolts came from. Slide the boot off the pin, apply grease and then put the boot back on and slide the pin back in.)

I should tell you that the pads come with the grease mentioned above, and also some replacement bolts for 14mm bolts in case the old ones are too rusty. (Mine were not.)

So I would advise following the first instructions to replace the rotors, then remount the assembly using the 17mm bolts, and then use the second set to change the pads and properly lubricate the clips and pins.

I hope this note helps a fellow xa/xb owner to save some time.

Phil
