Steering wheel shake-Is it tires?
I just bought my 2005 Scion xb last Monday and I love it! I bought it used with 70K. It runs fantastic but there is a lot of tire noise on the road and at highway speeds. The front tires were worn more than the back, so I had them rotate the tires yesterday. This morning I was driving to work and hit 70mph on the highway and it shakes pretty bad. Do I need new tires or just a balance? The mechanic told me the tires would last till winter.

Hi, if your rear tires are the same brand and thread, you might just need both front tires balanced. Check to see if they appear to be worn unevenly, tire preassure, or if any one of the rims appears bent. If the balancing does not fix the issue you might need. New tires. Assuming everything else was checked and you had no shaking before you had the tires rotated.

If you can find a shop with a hunter gsp9700 balancer, they can check the force runout of the tire and wheel assembly. This is much better than a standard balancer because it can diagnose if the problem is with the tires or wheels.
