Anyone Weld a receiver hitch to the rear reinforcement bumper?
Looking to weld in a 2" receiver hitch to the rear reinforcement bumper on a 2004 Scion xB. This will not be used for towing and is strictly for integrating a bike rack (2 bike max) I currently have. I normally drive my truck, but figured why not the Scion.
The bike rack, I'd estimate to be 30 lbs and each bike to range from 25-35lbs. I'll cut a square opening in the middle of the bumper for the receiver to stick out. Anyone else do this? Not wanting to buy an aftermarket receive hitch. The ones I've seen are either vertical design or only has a max of 1.5". I'd still need to buy an adapter to mount my existing bike rack. If I use the reinforcement bumper, I'll cut into it in order for the receiver to be recessed. Possibly have it go all the way through and weld from both sides. The other option, remove the reinforcement bumper and replace it with square tubing. It'll be a ladder design. _____ |
Seems like a tough way to go about mounting a bike rack when there are likely other more 'bolt-on' options that wouldn't require welding and cutting a hole in your bumper cover...but it's your car.
