Painters tape on waxed car?

If I just waxed the front of my xB and want to tape it up with painters tape for a trip tomorrow, Will the tape stick enough to hold on the fresh wax?

jwaj2002 10-15-2006 01:28 AM

why would you tape your xb up?

To protect the paint from rocks/bugs/etc, a lot of people do it when going on road trips:)

Max 10-15-2006 01:40 AM

Yes it will hold, but not super great, and before someone asks... no it will not remove the wax.

jwaj2002 10-15-2006 01:49 AM

never heard of that before...

It's pretty common, especially when you spent all day detailing your car and need to go to a show a couple hours away, and want to arrive clean.

jwaj2002 10-15-2006 01:57 AM

with mine I'd have to wrap the entire car in tape, I drive it 2 minutes its dirty again

iKevin 10-15-2006 11:32 AM

thanks for the info.

jwaj2002 - Yeah, I think that's yet another "joy" of living in the south . . . . all the freakin dust. Same thing here in bama. Clean it, drive it for a few mins, it's ready for another cleaning. But the tape should help me only have to do a quick hoseoff and shammy when I get there. (Unless I get lazy and just drive leave the tape on there for the ride back)

I spent 24 hours detailing my car for a show, by the time I got to the show(bout 60 miles one way) it was so dirty you couldn't tell my car was blue

Common for detailing but also when AUTOXing they make good temporary numbers and rock blockers on ur headlights and front end.

you dont need to tapeup your car after you wax it. when you get to your destination just spray some water on your car and then shammy it dry. 99.9% of the dirtand bugs will literally just wash off. i do it everytime i drive from portland to seattle...3 hour drive get there, wash it down *no scrubbing or soap* shammy dry....anythingleft gets hit with quick detail really quick. its easy as pie.

i got one of the leather bras for roadtrips..... wash the car then throw that sucker on... i always used a little painters tape on the edges were the clips touched the paint and on the mirroecovers....

hypermac99 10-15-2006 05:41 PM

yes it will work. I did this to my TC last month on a road trip from atlanta up to michigan. worked great

Filter524 10-15-2006 06:21 PM

I did it also on a raod trip to frisco. Worked like a charm. just try avoid using little pieces of tape, thats when they come off. Other than that it works great!

Max 10-15-2006 06:28 PM

Oh, and work from the top down, not bottom up when applying.

BlueTC06 10-15-2006 06:30 PM

you can also use 3M's OML it works as a protection for painting...just don't get it wet until your ready to remove it

Big_Bird 10-15-2006 06:38 PM

I use it all the time when i go to shows or on long trips, love how well it works

iKevin 10-16-2006 04:50 PM

Yep . . . worked like a champ for me. I'm sure i'll be doing it again for long trips.
