TRF xB grill
 

Hi guys

This grill is designed with style and performance in mind :D
Stock xB grill is completely sealed. Wind cannot go through the grill.
Lots of you changed to Toyota speed grill or billet grills for the sporty look and more airflow. This grill is designed to have the maximum airflow compare to most grills available now for the xB, and also give it a unique look.

The white line down in center is actually part of the car. Grill insert will cover that part.

The grill extended to the bumper. This design helps lead the wind from the bumper to the grill and enter into the center opening. The opening is just right in front of the header, which is one of high temperature part in the engine bay.

The curve of the grill is same with the factory bumper. We design the grill to be original but also have the character of its own. This grill is designed to be mild but also sporty for xBs with or without bodykits.

This grill is expected to be $150 unpainted and $200 painted. It will come with grill insert. As for now the material of the inserts is not decided yet, we will either use aluminum or plastic. It will be perforated with round holes instead of the diamond mesh we see on everyday Hondas.

Installation for this grill is very easy. It use the stock mounting holes on each side. Double stick tape on the bottom (where the grill and bumper attached) for extra sercurity. No brain required.

This grill is in production now and will be available next week. Quantity for the first batch will be very limited. I already have a waiting list for this grill. If you would like to be on the waiting list, please PM or e-mail me.

I am also doing R&Ds now and see if carbon fiber is possible.

i think it would look pretty good if you put the same grill material as the lower two grills or if you offered the lower two grills to match the top grill.

i have a question regarding the grill...

if the outlet allows air into the engine bay... what about water? like in rain or even a car wash...wouldn't it effect the engine components? just curious...

I think Tim will have that handled, he seems more a practicality over looks type of guy even if he's in the Aero industry.

I actually tried to find the same grill insert design that matches the other two grills on the car... Problem is no one actually doing it...

I can find a hexagon mesh but it still not matching the bottom piece... I even tried to see if I could buy anything from Toyota and cut it to the size of the grill. This grill can be offered w/o the insert for a cheaper price if you guys want to use something other than the perforated materials :)

If you are washing your car or just park outside when it rains, the purpose of the grill insert is to prevent large amount of water or unwanted object to get into the car. As long as you don't aim your hose right into the center opening, the amount of water that gets into the engine is very small. It is okay if water gets into your car, as long as it doesn't soak the alternator or battery, which in this case water will not get there. If you are driving your car and its raining, some water will get into the car passing the grill insert, but the temperature of the engine bay will vaporized the rain water without damaging to the car.

Water will get into any kinds of the grill as long as there is an opening. It happened to any model car that has a grill that drags the air into the engine. However the amount of the water is very small. You are not dumping whole buckets of water on you engine in this case.

We designed the grill so the bottom flat part actually have an angle to it. It tilt little upward at the inner part to prevent water gets into your engine bay when car is parked.

Excuse me if this sounds like a stupid question..... but do you think this will help the air conditioning work better by keeping the engine bay cooler?

No question is stupid question. You actually makes a point here... If this can help the AC become cooler, I got a new sales point :D

Well... I have never tested if the AC can become cooler... I don't even think I am able to test it. Theoretically, if you switch the AC to drag air from outside instead of circulating in the cabin... it should be cooler, or if not air will become cooler faster. But its just all theory.

I am sure it will help people with ram air intake system since cooler air flow into the engine... AC I am just not sure.

The painted one will be available ONLY in factory colors
I only use high quality paint from like Dupont or Toyota, and will match the factory color code.

Like I said, I am still looking for the right grill insert. I will post the finishing product next week and start to sell them. If you guys interested in getting this grill, please PM me or e-mail me in advance and I can put you in the waiting list. Like I said, the quantity will be very limited from the first batch.

Yes.....yes.....YES! Do that! I've been wondering why the hell I can't find something like that. I want the material that is in the bottom two grills in the TOP grill. Why.....oh why doesn't anyone do that? Ugh!

increasing the air pressure inside of the engine bay, will offset the pressure of the air flowing across the radiator.

The grill of the scion was designed in such a way to keep a high pressure flow of air across the radiator...

Cooling the engine compartment does not do a fraction of the good that cooling the radiator does.

So in summary.....use a grill like this that flows through, and you will essentially cause a boundary layer of non-moving air around the radiator....NOT GOOD!!!

You must have high pressure outside of the engine compartment, and low pressure inside to keep air flowing through the radiator.

PLEASE KEEP THIS IN MIND!!! You would be better off to make a grill that had a closed back.

looks good...but i just wanna add my 2 cents...
i dont like where the buttom part sticks out on the bumper...i like something just a retangle with mesh grille in the middle 8)

A very interesting explaination. It sounds right. I really like the original grill and would only change if I thought it would help cooling. I guess i will leave it alone.

a little off topic - but any plans for doing something for the bottom slots .... i'd kinda like to keep a theme (even if i gotta change the bottom to match the stock grill)

Sean, on the path to being a doctor, they made me take a lot of other non-doctor classes....such as a few years of physics and chemistry etc...

Thats how i got so smart....aside from that, some one explained that theory to me before. :roll: So i cant take credit for it, however, a quick check with fluid dynamics will assure you that is it accurate. Remember, some cars have flow through grills, but ONLY when there is a radiator behind the grill...

I just spoke to my cousin who works at Boeing as an engineer who also has master degree on physics.

Plain and simple explanation from him
No matter how big of open the grill is, the air flow will do no harm to the air flow into the radiator, reason is because when car is moving the air are forced to pass through the radiator regardless of the pressure.

Also talking about pressure, yes there is higher pressure in the engine bay than out side because higher temperature = higher pressure. You guys can do this lab at home, just boil some water and see if the vapor tries to push the lid up. Now the engine bay temperature is actually higher than out side, so the air actually pushing out from the radiator?? :roll: We need a open grill to cool down the engine bay temperature!!!

And last... is there really a pressure in engine bay?? Answer is yes, but not much difference than out side temperature. Why? Because our engine bay is not a closed system! We got gaps between the hood, headlights, and the biggest opening is bottom of the car.

A lot of the cars have their radiator right in front of the grill. But xB is different; our radiator locates behind bottom grills. The purpose of this grill is more like functional hood scoop if you compare it with different cars.

As for the lip of the grill that actually over lay the bumper... it is something that I designed to give it a character. A plain and squared grill will look nice also, but it will look similar to Fabulous grill or any other xB grills.

For the grill inserts, I found some hexagon (honey cone) design aluminum that somehow matches the bottom grills. (But a lot smaller) It is the same type of grill inserts that LSportsline (Lexus tuner) use which gives a unique and sporty look.

I am not smart, but glad I have people to give me suggestions, comments, and ideas to make me look smarter :D :D :D

BTW, I really glad arinvolvo brought this up, now I have more confident for my product :D

also, the TRD speed grilles have a plate behind the mesh to inhibit air flow into the engine compartment? i would think that TRD would have a reason for that....

I will purchase the mesh insert sometime next week.
I am buying it in a large quantity because that is the only way I can get better price.
It's going to be aluminum so it is lightweight and rust-free.

I also offer the grill w/o the mesh for $5 less so you guys can go ahead and get something you prefer. Sheet metal shops will often charge you about $4~$5 dollar for that size of grill but either in metal or steel, no aluminum.

Toyota speed grill has something in the back to block the air flow. I am sure it is there for a reason but it is hard to tell why (Just like the rear lip for xB is 2 pieces). If you guys are worry about the air flow get into your car but also want this grill, simply put a solid piece of metal/ fiberglass then it will be sealed again. :D

It's been a while since I've seen any updates on this grill. Any news? I love this grill madly and would buy one as soon as it becomes available (along with a Red Genie kit).

Is there any chance of getting an insert that looks similar to the ones that come with the RS1 package?

Then we could order the lower trenz and they'd match. Or you could do something similar for your grill insert, and the lower inserts, and we could order the whole kit from you.

He said he would sell them "next week" along with pics of the finished product...however his last post on it was January 22nd. Almost 4 months ago.

I have the Fabulous Grill which is similar to this one and it comes with a deflector which keeps water from going into the engine. Being the instructions were in Japanese, I can assume the deflector is for water entering the engine. View my profile to see the grill.

I want to see it painted and installed (with grille mesh) before I decide if I like it or not. :wink:
