1st Gen experts...PLEASE HELP!!!
 
Hey guys, been doing tons of research on the board and only been able to solve 1/2 of my xB's issue. Just over 86K miles and the car has run PERFECTLY until now. Here are the symptoms:

1. Stalling - The car will stall after long periods of acceleration when coming to a stop.

2. Hesitation / Sputtering - I changed the MAF sensor and it might have solved it for now, but I will put some more miles on before I can say for sure it's solved.

3. VSC / TRAC OFF / CHECK - So I looked through the search function and found alot of people have had this occur. What's funny with mine was that it came on, caused the car to have symptoms 1&2. After letting the car sit for a few hours, it was started back up and all the lights were mysteriously gone.

So, so far, I've changed out the spark plugs, MAF sensor and cleaned out the K&N drop in filter and also the TB. I'm hoping the symptoms don't come back, but I was wondering if anyone else has had the same issues. The only thing I'm really concerned about is the stalling, but the car starts up just fine right after. Besides the sputtering and hesitation under acceleration, the car seems to run fine. I hope someone can help put to rest the above issues. I appreciate any help I can get.

check your vaccum lines. why was the MAF replaced? auto or manual? and what spark plugs and are they gapped correctly?

Make sure all the engine bay fuses are seated properly. I had an issue where my xB would stall out on me while driving, then letting it sit for a while it would start up again. I traced the problem back to the EFI fuse in the engine fuse block. With the car running, if I wiggled the fuse with my finger, it would cut the engine off. Try this and see (the fuse tops are insulated so you won't get shocked). My fix was to stick a small flatblade screwdriver in the fuse holder and pry the two tabs holding the fuse in on one side closer together. Hasn't been a problem since.

Great info, thank you. It's a manual transmission. I replaced the MAF sensor after reading that some of my symptoms were happening to other owners with MAF problems.

I will go and check the fuse now and see. Thanks again for the information.

Our cars are not 1960's muscle cars. If your check engine lights come on goto the auto parts store and have them pull the codes. Then come on here and search for what the codes are.

Isn't the MAF like $100?

What if that was not the problem and it really is the fuse or an oxygen sensor?

When the lights come on again get the codes read.

take it to a shop before you just start replacing everything find out what the problem is

FYI, if you take it to an Autozone auto parts store they read codes for free.

I have access to a OBD2 scanner, but there is no code to read. It's gone. As for the fuse you mentioned, it's the box on the driver side correct in the engine bay correct? Which fuse is it?

there should be a diagram on the inside of the cover

Also the computer should store codes until it is reset.

I'd try disconnecting the battery for 5-10 minutes and let it reset the Ecu and it'll start learning over again.

mine did the same thing, sept the lights stayed on, wound up having to get the entire head replaced instead of just the vvti gears and ecu

I wonder if he needs to reteach it how to idle and if thats the problem?

my mom had a ford that everytime you unhooked the batter you had to leave it idling for about 15 minutes so it could learn to idle again

That's what I thought but it seemed to easy plus he said he just replaced that part. Now I'm confused. :doh:

^^^Air/Fuel sensor. Just like an O2 sensor but the a/f sensor has 4 wires and heats up REALLY fast within a few seconds. This is to bring the engine up to operating temps quickly. All this due to stricter emissions!
