Buying a Scion XB with body damage. Advice?
Hey guys - my first post here - love the XB's
I'm in Canada and been looking for a scion for awhile. I found one
I like a lot and runs really well the only problem is it has some body damage
on the back side:

I emailed this photo around to a few body shops for repair quote - and what I got back was in the neighborhood of $2000. Does that seem correct? Is it a big issue because of the location? That back area isn't a separate panel that can pop off - it's connected to the whole side piece that goes over the windows correct? Maybe fixing the damage is easy - but any paint work, theyd have to repaint the whole side of the car??
Anyone have damage in this area repaired before? What kind of costs? Thanks so much!!

The rear quarter panels are always going to be harder and more expensive to repair. If you really want to get in that xB and foot the bill for the damage then go ahead. I personally wouldn't unless I was good at body work.

Unless you have the tools and a shop to do the work yourself, it wont be worth your time. Fixing a quarter panel is expensive because it has limited access - you cant exactly unbolt it.
Also, lights will have to be replaced, body work and paint done on the quarter panel and bumper, paint blending on the door, and also checking for unibody structural damage. If there is damage, which there probably is, time on the frame pulling rack can get very expensive.
If you really want it, I would throw an offer 2k less than the asking price. Any more and you may as well just get one with no damage.

She was asking $14000 for the Xb which is grey - 53000 miles - 2006 - some better speakers/sub and stereo - The inside is well taken care of and drives well. She then dropped to $11000 as is. I'm still worried about this body damage - I was thinking about offering her $10 000 counting on $2000 for the body work - but if it's more than that I won't be happy. Now I'm thinking offering $9000 but I dont think she'll like that. Not a lot of these scions for sale up here in Van Canada yet - What should i be paying for this?

you can find one for cheaper and less miles then 14k. i got one box with 14k on it for 13k and one with 12k for 12k. look around at local dealers, you'll find one that DOESN'T need extra crap done to it. it is a nice idea to have the added stereo, but 53k is a lot of miles.

Look at www.toyodiy.com for the prices of possible parts you'll need to replace , add time for labor and paint and make a decision.
Chances are you can find one cheaper in the long run.
Just the price of the rear bumper , support , brackets and paint would come to about $3000 USD. And that is before pulling out the corner , 1/4 panel and any unseen damage. Unless you DIY.
Good Luck

awesome - thanks for the advice guys! I'll check out that site - $2000 was manageable but if it's $3000 plus then I'd need a better discount. And I'm terrible with DIY - so that's not an option - though I may have someone who wants to barter body work for artwork - which may be good or terrible... I guess the main thing again is that those cars aren't common up here yet. Maybe when Scion brings the new ones to Canada in sept it may be easier to find a 2006 xb.
