Today I was trying to figure out how to lock the doors while the key was still in the ignition. People on SL have been upset because they cant go in a store when the car is running. Also because they cant heat their cars durring the winter.
I sat in the driver seat with the key in the ignition and the driver door open. I used the door lock button, but all the doors unlocked for some reason. Then I tried it again, only this time I held my finger down on the driver lock, in lock position. The other three lockes automatically unlocked, but my finger kept the driver lock down and it did not release from lock position after I moved my finger from it. Then I manually pressed each lock down with my finger.
All of the doors stayed locked. I closed the driver side door, and the alarm didnt want to trigger, but thats ok I guess. As long as I'm not warming the car in the winter with the doors unlocked, everything should be ok.

I like my way better:
1) leave car running
2) unlock driver door manually
3) exit car
4) insert spare key and lock door

Your way will probably wear the drivers lock out

That is a good point. All locking the doors is going to do is cause thef to break your window. Just means if you stolen car is found it will cost more to repair. The simple fix. Move to a area where you can leave you car warming up for 10min with doors unlocked & no one giving it a second look

just install an alarm with remote start feature. so you can start car, doors will be locked & if someone gets in and step the brake the car will dieout, and you can program how long you want the car to stay on. well that's what i did on my XB.

mmmmm, medical mary jane
if you live somewhere where you have to warm up the car in the morning, then i would get remote start.......just my opinion.......too much trouble to go with those two other options....
if you live in a place like me ....sunny san diego.......dont need to warm up the car in the morning.....just get in the car and go........ :D

If you don't want a remote start, but want to safely leave your car running, check out the Pivot Security Push Button Starter.
Car keeps running, you push in a security code (1-10 clicks) and you can't drive until you push the same number of clicks to enable driving again. Great for warming up, or running in the store, etc.

holding down the lock button will burn-out the lock solinoids. why not remove the power lock feature (read: remove fuse'). then you could just lock it at any time. (doors open/closed key in the ingnition)
the engineers spent time making a system that will prevent people from accidently locking their keys inside the car.

hey guys actually i have a pretty good way had to do it at the beach the other day im in florida and had to charge my video camera. i had to leave my keys in the acc position and got out try to lock didnt do it so then i got in and locked it from the passenger side door switch and with it open shut it and it worked.
so leave key in ignition
get out of car
walk to passenger side open door
lock and shut
easiest way yet
and then you unlock key pad to get back in
peace
