flashing "MAINT REQ" light at start-up... WTF?

After driving on the freeway and stopping to get gas, my CEL started to flash everytime I started up the engine. It would then stop after a few seconds. This started right after I put on the new 18's. Any comments or questions?

Keitaro 01-03-2006 09:39 PM

Are you talking about the "blue light special" maintenance light or the orange/yellow CEL light?

The blue light blinks once it has reach a 5K mile interval. This is a reminder to get an oil change. If you change the oil yourself at less than 5K mile intervals, you need to manually reset each time by following the directions below:

the yellow/orange CEL light. The engine runs and sounds fine, but i think it might be doing this under the strain of the heavier rims. but thats just my theory...

TurboTighe 01-03-2006 09:48 PM

Can't be the rims.
I run 20's and 18's.
You need to check your fault codes.
Autozone will do it for free. Better to send a pretty girl if your Autozone is like ours.
Guys get ignored, while fine chicks can get a complete engine overhaul!

haha, thanks man. pretty girls are a dime a dozen here in OC. i don't think i'll have a problem w/ that =)

Flashing Check engine light is usually a VERY BAD SIGN. Solid CEL usually means there's an emissions problem, but blinking means the engine is doing something critically wrong.

Please, avoid driving the vehicle. You might be doing more damage by driving it.

I've never seen a "Check Engine" light. Mine has a flashing "Maint Req'd" that started today. I checked the mileage, and it's been 5100 miles since the oil change. Guess I better get in for the change on Thursday.

NotAllBad 01-03-2006 10:05 PM

if it was doing something wrong, i'd probably hear it.

masafina 01-03-2006 10:06 PM

I recomended to scan your xb because the cel only come when is something
wrong with any sensor of the engine not for rims

NotAllBad 01-03-2006 10:06 PM

thats the light thats been flashing @ start up... hmmmm i bet thats what it is.

senseiturtle 01-03-2006 10:09 PM

If its "maint req"... then you can reset it.

The tC's reset is hold the trip reset button while key to on. Hold until the blips flash down.

I have a xB though w/ no engine mods. i'll try it though

crayonBOX 01-03-2006 10:11 PM

im guessing he's talking about teh light that's shaped like a little engine?

check under the hood at all the connecters, anything that can be plugged in, and check it all. i left something disconnected once and the light came on. checked everything, disconnected the battery for like 10mins then it was all better

NotAllBad 01-03-2006 10:16 PM

nope. its the 'maint req' light

Shoe_Here 01-03-2006 10:43 PM

Keitaro is right. It is because of the oil change. at like 4000 miles it starts to blink when you turn the car on, when you hit 5000 miles between oil changes, it will stay on until you reset it.

jbae1221 01-03-2006 10:50 PM

you know what it could be,,,, when someone was putting on your rims they could have bumped the brake/tire spped sensor... for the abs... i could be wrong, but i changed my springs on my tc and left one off, and i got the cel... so check that also...

markritch 01-03-2006 10:51 PM

yea its the oil....they reset the computer at 5000 ... 10.000 and so on...mine was doing that and i was like waht the F *** and then i got my oil changed and i asked him, and the technician said he reset it

NotAllBad 01-28-2006 08:17 PM

thats exactly what it was... i took my car into jiffy lube, changed the oil, but still had the light. called up the local toyota dealership, and they told me how to reset it. problem solved =)

akbxb 01-28-2006 08:28 PM

lol. all of these people saying crazy stuff to scare you. i have an 06 CSM tC and the light started to blink at 4500 miles when i first started it. got my oil changed and toyota resetted it.

my sister's tC light stayed solid when she went over 5000.

7. how do i reset and/or specify the interval for the 'maintenance required'/oil change light using the trip meter button?
the tC's ecu (computer) memorizes the distance your car has traveled. scion recommends that you change your oil every 5,000 miles. when your car exceeds 4,500 miles, the ecu will flash the maintenance required light for 12 seconds after turning the key to 'on'. if it exceeds 5,000 miles, then the ecu keeps the maintenance required light on until it is reset. so, how do you reset it? follow these steps (this procedure is also listed in the tC owner's manual, pg. 96):

step 1 turn the key to the 'on' position. using the trip meter button, toggle the lcd until 'ODO' is displayed.
step 2 turn the key off. now, push and hold the trip meter button. while holding the trip meter button, turn the key to 'on'.
step 3 while you continue to hold the trip meter button, you will see on the lcd disply five (5) small dashes and they will begin to 'count down' rather quickly.

step 4 continue holding the trip meter button and once all the dashes have been cleared, your lcd will display six zeros (000000) - release the trip meter button now - and then the lcd will display 'ODO' and your current mileage. at this time, your 'maintenance required'/oil change light has been reset.
*note* each dash represents 1,000 miles. if you like to change your oil every 3,000 miles for example, release the trip meter button when only two (2) dashes remain. that way, you will get the reminder light at the next 3,000 mile mark instead of 5,000.

8. how do i clear the 'maintenance required'/oil change light using the trip meter button?
if at the time you changed your oil, you or the person changing your oil did not reset the 'maintanence reqiured'/oil change light or if you would just rather turn it off instead of setting the interval (aka- the lazy way to turn off that annoying light), follow these steps:

step 1 turn the key to the 'on' position.
step 2 reset both trip meters to zero. you can reset the trip meters to zero by selecting trip a or trip b and holding in the trip meter button for five (5) seconds.
step 3 after both trip meters are reset, select any trip meter and hold in the trip meter button and start the car.

step 4 continue holding the trip meter button until the "maintenance required' light disappears.
