Default How bad is the windshield issue?

Just wondering, I'm considering purchasing an 06 xB, but I've read multiple places that they go through windshields like crazy due to the steep angle absorbing rock impacts instead of deflecting them.

now granted that 85% of my driving is city, still....I don't want to be replacing windshields all of the time.

I even saw that there was a class-action lawsuit about the issue.

So from owners of these cars, how bad is it? Thanks.

most people i see get at least one major crack in the time they own their vehicle... sometimes two.. depends on the conditions of where you're driving.

.. but as far as chips are concerned... small chips are common for any car. if you like the car enough... and seeing as most of your driving will be city... i can only assume that you'll be fine for the most part.

I had one small chip in mine four 3 years with no problems, then i had it crack not near the chip and had to replace mt window once. I say that is not bad for 6 years and 175,00 miles mostly done on the highways and back country roads.

My 2006 windshield cracked without a rock hitting it at all. I was slowing down to a stop sign and I just saw the crack appear. I was able to get a free replacement under (http://xbwindshieldsettlement.com/) but it took a helluva lot for the toyota dealership to approve it. they kept claiming they couldnt do it, even when the settlement board had approved the replacement. The 2006 xb windshield was installed incorrectly so that is what causes the bad cracks, and that is what the settlement is all about.

One replaced windshield.......in the first year of owning my 05. Now have 321,000 miles on it. Took a hard hit last week.......but it survived. Lots of truck activity in the area last three years.

2006.5 xB owner. I've replaced one window since purchasing in April of 2006. I had to replace it after I received my 5th rock chip finally started a crack (which was from a rock kicked out by another gen 1 xb LOL). While rock chips are happenstance, you will get a sandblasted look over time if you do a lot of freeway driving.

Once the original factory windshield is replaced, it seem like the cracking problems disappear.

The after-market, replacement windshields are much stronger.

I've had my '06 box for almost 5 years and have only had to replace the windshield once, because I let a large chip develop into a crack that went all the way across. But like you, I've also read of owners who have gone through half a dozen windshields. Luck of the draw, maybe?
