im at 24k miles on the dot right now and the front brakes feel a little funny. next time im going to the dealer for an oil change (25k miles), i'm going to ask what the problem with the front brakes. when i am on an uphill and reversing, as i apply the brakes, i hear a knocking sound coming from the front wheel wells.

when the dealer tells me the problem, im going to take my car to a non-dealer mechanic and have it fixed ;-D l0l
You might want to check the little spring clips that support the pads in the calipers. I had the same noise it sounds like. Just pull the calipers off ( if you are handy) and remove the pads. Next remove the stainless spring clips at the top and bottom and kinda bend them back out again. This cured my cluck noise when I was backing up and applying my brakes.

Also i just looked today after pulling off my snows, and my front pads looked way more than half gone at 28,000. I looked at my rears, and they looked better. But those fronts didn't look too good to me and they are coming off REAL soon.

My driving is mixed, half heavy city stop and go, and half on the highway to and from work.

just an update -

i went for an oil change at 25k miles and the dealer said i needed to have my brakes done! again! wtf!!!!! i had them first changed at 14k miles and now at 25k miles, the dealer said i have only a thousand miles or so left on 'em. at 14k miles, the front brakes were changed, not the rears, but the dealer said the rear shoes would have to be changed the next time the front pads are done.

that was at 25k miles. i am at about 26,500 miles now so this past weekend, i went to a local autoparts place, and picked up both the pads and shoes ($63 total) then went to a local place and had them installed for $110!

now my box stops nicely... but for how long? 1st shoes had to be replaced at 14k miles, then 11k miles later. i don't know why im having such sh!tty mileage but anyway...

and the ticking that i had coming from my wheel well went away. like one of the members said on this board, that it was probably the brakes and it was! good call dave!

After being screwed at the dealer when my brakes wore out at 14k miles (i paid nearly $340 for new pads + resurfacing rotors - i didnt know before hand), i am now planning on buying brand new Brembo rotors and kevlar or ceramic brake pads.

this is the stuff im considering --
http://www.buybrakes.com/store/BR25863 - brembo - $70 per rotor

http://www.buybrakes.com/store/45-08220U - Ceramic Brake Pads - $58 for a set.

or a set of rotors + pads - from 365 motorworks (SL member)
http://www.365motorwerks.com/index.a...ROD&ProdID=448

the stock pads wore out at 14k. assuming they used the same type of pads when they replaced mine, i figure i have to do the brakes again at 28k miles or more. i'm at about 24k miles now. so i'm going to buy these components within the next couple of months.

Changed mine out for ceramics at 16K just because I was sick of all the brake dust, the stockers had about 50% left on them(socal driving).

I just surpassed 36K miles and I still have about 30% left. It's funny cause I bought oem pads about 3 weeks ago and I still haven't put them on!

Same exact thing I did !!

I have right at 29,000 and they are about 30% also. I did not buy the rear shoes yet and I wonder if the life will be as short with the rears as it was with the fronts. I need to check that. Any input everybody???

My other car just turned 81,000 and looks like I'll have to do it's FIRST brake job.

Heh, i went 18k on my first set, then made it to 38k on the second set, and im probably going to replace them again this february.

Ive replaced the brakes every February in my car. 75% of my driving is city though.

in Feb 09, i should have close to 60k on the box.

I just turned 49,000 miles, still on my first set but im pulling off the wheels tomorrow and see how the pads look. I was going down a hill in town and had to hit the brakes for a suddent yellow light, I heard that nerve rattling screach for the first time, I'll let you know how the pads look.

bought new rotors and pads at 36000 because I wanted to. Rotorpros.com for the slotted and dimpled rotors, and eBay for EBC Green Stuff Brake Pads.

I'm under 21K and when I stop it kind of does a quiet whir (the front brakes.). Guessing I'm going to need new pads.

Any place on line that shows how to change these on xB?
