Installing a Shift ball
How hard is it to install an aftermarket shift ball?
I want to change the one that came with the car to the Chrome plated one that Scion offers. Has anyone switched this item before and was it difficult to do?
Also, I am thinking about installing the mudflap to the back. Is this difficult to do, or should I just have the dealer do it.?

Easier than filling up at the pump.
To change the shift ****, grab it, and turn it counter-clockwise until it comes off. Done.
To put on the new one, put it on top, and turn it clockwise until it is secure. Done.
To make sure that your car doesn't blow up, you have to jump up and down 3 times, and run around the car 5.6 times. If you do this final step incorrectly, be prepared to suffer the consequences.
Mudflaps involve screws. . . not hard at all.

Got the new chrome ball and it was a sinch to install. Just got one problem.
How do you raise the clip that is under the leather cover so that it is flush with the bottom of the new shift ball. Right now I have a 2 inch clearance from where the old ball was.
There is a clip that holds the cover up but I can't figure it out by touch. I tried turning it and nothing happens and I tried to feel for a release edge - but there is none.
So how do the professionals do it?
The ball installed easily.

i JUST fixed this exact same problem with mine. Got my $50 voucher from scion, had nothing else i really wanted, so i got the OBX ****. The metal collar on the boot rattling was starting to drive me NUTS since the OBX **** is too short (as you found out)
I solved it by going to Home Depot and buying a 4-pack of toilet washers for $1.50. Take the **** off, and put the desired number of washers around the shifter (personally I used two, but the way you described your situation it sounds like you have a LOT more play than I did). You'll have to use the old geometry "fold a circle in half to make it bigger" trick in order to slide them on, but once they were on and i screwed the **** back on, you can barely tell they're there but the rattling has finally gone away.
The diameter of the washers is just less than that of the boot's collar, and just above that of the lower portion of the OBX ****. I can take pics if you want to see how it looks, I really dont think it's bad at all.
edit: upon re-reading your post you dont have an OBX **** so I'm not sure if this will work for you if you do have THAT much room above your collar to the **** itself. Honestly if you have that much room..... I think some people would probably go buy a different boot, or a different ****, to make things work. GL. At least my story might help anyone else who had a similar problem to mine though hehe

I do have the OBX chrome **** made by Racing Sport SK14.
I adjusted it to the medium level. There are three levels you can adjust your **** to, depending on where you want the shifting action.
You probably have it on the High level which will put the **** lower on the stick. It also depends on how much you screwed yours down. I could probably screw mine some more to reduce the clearance, but I am still experimenting with the right fit level.
There's got tobe another trick out there besides putting washers in. If there is none than I guess that will be my only option. Maybe I can find a chrome spacer. Does anyone know of where I can get a spacer?
