Problem at the Pump

I am just curious if anyone else has the same problem that i do.

Not every time i fill up but id say more than 50%, when i'm filling up with gas it wont let me put in more than a few cents at a time. It is like the tank is full and the nozzle shuts off . sometimes holding the handle at half way solves the problem but that takes forever. Mine is an 04 Xb and i know my friend with a hot lava Xb has said he had the same problem , but the dealership said they havent heard anything about it. Has anyone else had this problem?

I have had that happen to me a couple of times... I thought it had something to do with my credit card. :silly:

This is a known issue, the dealer will fix it for free. It involves replacing the tank and filler neck. There is a TSB out on this.

Mine does it also. I just put in on the lowest click and wait a while longer for it to fill. I just hate it when the pump has too high of pressure and it won't allow you to fully fill it without splashing out some fuel.

Has anyone had this fix done at the dealer? Does it work?

DibujoB 04-25-2005 08:14 PM

This has been discussed a ton.

My 04 xB had the same problem, but it went away after awhile. Try putting the handle in just a little bit, then once that gas starts flowing pull it the rest of the way.

I don't think I would let the dealer touch my box for something as minor as this. They usually do more damage in the process, especially around anything painted. Also try pulling the nozzel out an inch or two. It seems to not do it as bad.

Either fight with the pump handle every time it decides to have a problem or go get it fixed for free. It solved my pump problems and didn't cost me anything other than the time it took to drop it off and pick it up.

Your choice which way you want to go.

If you haven't gotten the hint this has been covered. Scion will fix it.

FrankenScion 04-25-2005 09:23 PM

It's definitely worth the time to get it fixed. It's so much nicer not having to fight the gas pump everytime you fill up.

bB2NER 04-25-2005 09:34 PM

I would fix it myself if the dealer would give me the parts. I don't trust them to NOT scratch something though. Have heard of too many horror stories. I usually don't even let them prep my new cars because of the possible damage that could result!

That sounds like paranoia.
It's a pretty invloved fix in some cases with lots of replacement parts.

bB2NER 04-25-2005 09:43 PM

Wouldn't it just involve replacing the filler neck? What other parts would be involved?

Tomas 04-25-2005 09:54 PM

Oddly enough my xB is in the S/N range covered by the TSB, but does not appear to have the problem...

bB2NER 04-25-2005 10:05 PM

It's not that much of a problem for me to worry about. If it gets harder to add fuel then I might inquire about getting the parts to fix it.

Max 04-25-2005 10:17 PM

I had mine done, it's much nicer now. Here are the parts they used:

QTY PN DESCRIPTION
2 90501-35036 SPRING, COMPRESSION
1 17451-21030 GASKET, EXHAUST PIPE
1 77201-52270 PIPE SUB-ASSY FUEL TANK FILLER
1 77001-52180 TANK SUB-ASSY, FUEL
1 77177-33010 GASKET, CHECK VALVE

The tank and pipe are new part numbers, the others are the same as stock.

I checked on the price of the parts alone and it was somewhere around $450 to order them. The estimated time is 4.7 hours, mine was done in two.

thanks Max, that's all I was looking for... just wanted to hear someone say that the dealer fix works before I take mine in. For me, the problem is really bad. Backing the nozzle out does not work at all, and squeezing the nozzle the bare mimum requireed to operate does not work either. The only time I don't have this problem is when I happen to come across a gas station that pumps the gas at a real low pressure. Which still means that it takes forever for me to fill up.

Dealers dont know sh!t

Man i made that post and forgot to check on it, i went to the dealer to ask them about that the day i posted that question and the guy said that they had heard nothing about any problems with the gas filler. I have yet to meet a scion dealer that knows more about the line than i do, i dont claim to know everything, but goddamn if you expect me to give you 15-20 thousand dollars at least know what the hell you are selling. Im tired of have every question i ask them answered wth "i dont know". These are the same guys that cant seem to understand that you cant touch halogen bulbs wth your fingers cause ive had to replace my foglights 3 times now. They had a good thing going with this car they just need some people who arent over the age of 60 making decisions, if your gonna have a car marketed after kids then maybe you should get a couple of younger people in on it, things are gradually getting better with the name brand optional parts like DC sports, AEM, Hotchkiss, and TYC but honestly whose idea was it to put obx parts on these cars them might as well used APC.
Well this rant has gone on long enough maybe elsewhere in the country dealers know their ____ but here in kansas they couldnt tell the difference between an xA and an xB if someone drove one up their ___
