It is amazing to think that people would actually pay the dealer asking price on a used car. Most of the used xBs that I have seen on dealer lots are asking the new car price for xBs with up to 40k miles.

Typically a dealer will put a sticker price on the used car as leverage on the trade in. It gives them a lot more negotiating head room and makes the customer feel good that they are going to get $4,000 trade in for their 150k mile 15 year old car.

If you want to get a good ball park idea of what a car is worth check either KBB or Edmunds. I find Edmunds to be more realistic on pricing than KBB.

I have noticed that xBs on e-bay are trending towards the seller not getting the reserve price for the car. This could be for a number of factors, but certainly they are not as hot as they were a year ago.

Come to Northern Va, we have a surplus of xB's at dealerships around here. Its not that they arent selling, its that theyre selling so many, they have to have a bunch more to make up for the difference

When I negotiated for my used Xb, the dealer didn't want to budge too much on the "pure price," so I continued to work them on the trade in value for my car. They came up from $1500 to $2250 on the trade. The internet price is usually lower than the sticker price of the vehicle. If so, print off that bad boy and bring it with you to the dealer so they honor the internet price. There is always room to negotiate with a used vehicle, but, as others have said, demand makes things a bit more difficult. However, if they price things too high, nobody will even bother looking. A dealer near me had an '04 priced at $19K and it sat forever.

i would never buy a used scion esspecially just for the simple fact that they are so cheap, you might as well buy it new. What's a couple more grand when you're already paying 15-20 ya know?

A couple more grand = 2 months mortgage in this godforsaken part of the US. It's also a matter of sales tax, insurance, etc. when you compare new vs. used. It all adds up to someone like me.

Used out here in the Bay Area is just a few hundred cheaper than new. I guess demand is pretty good in these parts where unleaded gas in $2.77 gallon.

A used 2004 PW xA w/ 17 inch wheels, and 30k miles was $14,995 at one of the dealerships.

It sounds like the dealer did a good job selling you your xB. There is no such thing as "pure pricing" on a used car. Certainly some dealers may state a non-negotiable price. But like I stated before, they make it up on the trade. It makes the numbers look better for them in the end.

In your original post you did not mention what you actually ended up paying for your used car, the mileage or what mods were included. The general rule of thumb depreciation trend that I have seen on most cars is $1000 for each 10,000 miles and $1000 to drive it off the lot. Modifications are usually worth about 50-75 cents on the $.

Certainly some people value the new car smell more than others, but the incidental cost difference between new and used are not so obvious. Would you mind sharing your research on the cost differences on the "incidental" expenses like tax, lic., registration, delivery fee, and insurance between a new '04 and a used '04 xB?

Greetings, Mr. Knight. A good job selling me the car? If by "good job" you are stating that I negotiated well and they gave me a good deal, well, sure. Good job, matey. No dealer ever does a good job selling me a car. I put the "pure pricing" in quotes because this is what the sales rep tried to refer to when selling the car, but, as you stated, it was truly their non-negotiable price since it is a used vehicle. The rep. was confused between the pure pricing of a new vehicle and a non-negotiable price on the used. The price on the vehicle was 15,490 and had 20K on it. I believe that the Internet price was 14,900. I ended up buying it for 14,490. It's an automatic, has the TRD exhaust, anti-theft, fog lights, spoiler, interior LED lights and rear bumper applique. What a sweet word, "applique."

I had a '97 Civic with 145K on it, 5 speed in good condition as a trade. Getting $2,240 for it was decent, in my opinion, since the mileage is a bit above average and it didn't have any options except a CD player. Edmunds says $3,000 and you MIGHT get that when buying a new vehicle.

I had no hard numbers readily available but after a few clicks on edmunds.com, these are some of the figures. The dealer price for an XB with my options and mileage is $15,135. Base auto shows as $14,680 based on scion.com. Add $515 for destination which brings you to $15,195. If I calculated all of my accessories correctly, they are $1,956, bring the total to $17,151. The insurance difference is probably miniscule based on my stellar driving record (maybe $50). The sales tax is 5%. So, instead of paying $612.50, (14,490 - 2,240), I would have paid $745 buying a new XB. Excise tax is certain to be much higher on an '05 than an '04. I am sure that I can dig up those numbers somewhere, but....

Without hurting myself too much more, I think that we are currently at a difference of $2843.50. In my opinion, that constitutes a fairly large monetary difference between buying a new 2005 and a used 2004 vehicle. Now, by doing all of this fun math, I am certainly not against buying a new car and won't at anyone that buys new. I just like to hang on to my $3,000 and spend it on other fun stuff, like new alloys. Cheers.

Quote "Sounds like you "done good" on that one. Congrats!
Did that come from a Scion dealer, another New car dealer, a used car dealer, or from an individual? Just curious." Quote

Jamesgang I got that off of e-bay from an individual. (he bragged on these boards that he only paid $12,000 for it in CT) OK, I was a little adventerous...drove from Long Island to Chicagoland. even got a stick...wow am I in love.

I friend of mine was looking for a used one for his daughter, and the cheapest he could find (at a dealer) was $15,400 for a used 2005 with 10k miles. autotrans and cruise was the 2 options it had. At the least, I would say they are holding good.

"Really? I bought mine in April and up here they are giving them away (sort 0f). There were a bunch of 2004's in the 12-13000 range. All with decent miles. There was a 2005 BCP with 10k miles for $11,900. It's almost worth it to fly up here and buy one. I don't think used dealers around here know what they are worth. that and Scions are just starting to catch on up here. "
