Catback Vs Axleback? Tanabe Medalion Touring Vs Concept?

My jack slipped while working with my car and put a healthy dent in my stock muffler :(. Consequently, I'm looking at buying an exhaust.

I've read some people seem to like the Tanabe Medalion Touring, and so I searched and found they have two catback exhaust systems available for the '08 xB. The Medalion Touring and the Medalion Concept. Given an otherwise stock exhaust, do these catbacks make much difference relative to an axleback (TRD for example)?

Also, anybody have any sense of the physical and practical differences between the Touring and the Concept catback?

If there's anything else I should be considering -- I'm listening thanks :)!

It occurs to me the cheapest solution would be to remove the stock axleback, take it to a muffler shop, and have a new muffler installed (or perhaps install it myself with hacksaw and clamps.) If I were to take this approach, any idea what would be a good muffler to get?

i checked the tanabe site and the only one out from them is the medalion touring and that one is an axleback like the TRD.

if youre thinking about performance, i think that the resonator is so restrictive that any increased flow so far down it doesnt really matter

Here are the listings I was viewing, but now I notice a note near the bottom that says axleback :(.

Hmm! So it seems my best solution is really just to have my muffler replaced.

ok you got to realize that both of them use the same pic. and that pic isnt of the xB2 exhaust system. second, yes those are the right product numbers for the product but the medallion touring is still a axleback. the concept g is probably a axleback too seeing that the xD is a axleback.

good luck with the repair. i think you can get a universal tip and the pipe for like 200.

from the two TANABE axleback, which have a nicer deep tone to it? is it loud? how does the sound compare to TRD? also are the pixs of the two TANABE system?

I have a Tanabe medalion touring axel back on my first gen and its great you cant go wrong looks and sound and also no drown or buzz, all around good product.

That's the thing I'm wondering about now -- if it will cost me approaching $200 to replace my stock unit, perhaps it would make more sense to pay the other $200 for the Tanabe! Would like to see a little lower price though.

I notice KPMotoring.com offers the 04-07 xB Medalion Touring for $305 with a list of $360. Whereas AutosportStyle.com shows the 08 version for $385 with a list of $440! Wonder how long before the 2008 price gets more in line with the xB1 version.

I've learned I can replace my stock muffler for about $152 (including $12 for shipping), or I can go for the Tanabe Medalion Touring for $415 (including $31 for shipping). Are there any lower prices out there for the Tanabe Touring axleback? At almost three to one, the stock muffler looks attractive :(!

actually what is the difference between the 2 tanabe exhaust?
does one sound louder than the other?
are there a difference in performance gains?
the difference in weight, size and material?
does it sound louder than the TRD exhaust?

miketf1 04-22-2008 03:36 AM

1&2. the difference is probably slight sound difference and it looks different
3. the resonator/cat is very restrictive and so is the small piping up to the axle so with any exhaust there is minimal (>1HP)
4. details that tanabe will announce here when its ready for sale
5. ask tanabe or wait till a member gets the exhaust and hopefully posts a video
