Default Dumb question

Hi all; I just bought a 09 xB. I have driven nothing but stickshifts up to now. There is a D, D3 and D4 on my xB. I always use "D" for normal driving. When should I use D3 or D4? Surprisingly, the user manual does not mention this. Thanks and sorry for the dumb question... And coming from stickshifts, I feel like my right hand and left foot are itching for something to do.

You almost never use D3 or D4. They are for locking out hte gears above them. D3 locks out 4th and 5th gear, D4 locks out 5th gear. You would only want to use them when towing or if you are on a long downhill to keep your speed down without using the brake as much. Aside from that you ignore them. And yes it'll take awhile to get use to not having a stick and clutch, just be aware of it if you panic stop. If you are like me you will automatically go to slam the brake and clutch down and both feet will hit the brake. Stops you really fast!

Thank you, that was very helpful. So could we consider the regular "D" as a "D5", roughly corresponding to 5th gear in a stickshift?

Sort of. It gives you access to 1st through 5th, but the transmission ECU gets to choose which gear it thinks you should be in.
