Correct....another thing to also realize that 0W-20 with Mobil1 for example, is not the same as 0W-20 with Redline.

 

That's quite true. It seems to me that Redline tends to be a bit heavier than most others at the same viscosity rating. It is also the only oil I know of that claims to contain group 5 ester base stock although like the rest, they don't state what percentage or if other types of base stock are also used.

Just thought I'd share...

This morning on my way to work in traffic on the freeway, there was a 08-10 xB ahead of me in the next lane.....seemed like everytime she would get on the gas there was blue smoke from the exhaust.

 

My '08 has 70k miles and have been changing the oil/filter every 10k miles using Mobil 1 Syn. I've consistently burned 1 qt. every 5K miles which is perfect for my oil change interval since it freshens up the oil in the crankcase at the mid-point of my cycle.

 

Obviously there's no way to know for certain why that XB was blowing blue smoke, there are many ways by which a careless owner can destroy cylinder walls, pistons and rings. Just like a few a$$hats destroyed this poll by voting that they burn 1 qt every 1,000 miles without even posting. Not to mention that the thread/poll has 2870 views but only 26 votes. IMO this poll is worthless. Thanks SL!

Oil used: Mobil 1 5w-20.
Observations: usually do about 1.5-2 quarts of consumption between 5,000 miles oil changes. Normal 60/40 highway/city driving.

I have 22K miles on my 2011 and use Mobil 1. I just checked the oil yesterday and it's still right at the top line with 2300 miles since it was changed...

I also averaged 27.3 MPG on my last fill up verified by my calculator. The readout on the dash has been at 27.6 avg for a while now...

 

This poll is an epic FAIL. It appears that every SL member with a 2AZFE that burns oil has voted while only a handful of non-oil burning 2AZFE owning members have bothered to vote. I was afraid this might happen. I tried to delete the poll but could not. IMO the poll results are total BS and should be dismissed as such.

FWIW, my turbo-charged 2AZFE just passed 58k miles, over 30k of them boosted. I checked the oil level after 3k miles and as usual, it was exactly where I filled it to 3k miles ago. I might lose 1/2 qt in 5k miles depending upon the oil used but normally I never add between 5k OCIs. Of course I don't run very thin 0-5w20 fuel economy oil in my engine so that might have much to do with the low oil usage. 5W30 FTW.

 

New here. 2008 xB with 72k miles. Got the low oil pressure light at about 67k mile mark, about 5k miles after previous oil change. Before that never thought I had oil consumption problem. Now I check every week. Put in 1/2 qt at 3k mark, and then just now at 4500 mille mark oil pressure light came on again while braking. Put in 1.5 qt. I'm putting in 5W30, and will use that next oil change. The dipstick is very difficult to read, which complicates the matter about ascertaining the true oil level in the engine.

I also noticed over a year ago at about the 55k mark that there was an exhaust smell whenever I ran the floor heater vents at the highest temp setting. Does that have anything to do with my oil consumption?

 

You may already be doing this, but if not, make sure you wipe the dipstick with a rag or piece of paper (not dirty) before re-inserting it to measure the oil level. If you're just pulling it out and looking, that's not the way to do it. With the engine off and preferably having had a chance to sit just a little, remove the dip stick, wipe it (as above), briefly reinsert it, and then remove again to read.

 

107,500 miles, mobil 1 5w-20 oil. Checked dipstick after 2000 miles, mainly city driving. had to add 1/4 of a quart of oil. I own 3 toyotas (lexus, toyota and a scion) and 1 subaru. The Scion is the only one I have that consumes oil, and the only one that uses 5w-20. Very minimal tho, so no complaints here.
Im wondering if I switch to 5w-30 if it will eliminate the oil consumption.

Does anyone know if the 5w-20 is for better MPGs or does the motor really have tighter tolerances that it requires a thinner oil?

 

In light of peoples inputs and Toyotas oil consumption campaign, there's no reason at this point to presume the lighter oil is for any purpose other than helping mpg. If you care more about the life of your engine than mpg, probably best to use 5W-30.

 

UPDATE: Sorry I am just guesstimating as I drive ~100 miles/day but I am now using 1 qt in probably 1k miles (maybe more). And added some nice thick Lucas treatment when low lol. I will keep track better the next few weeks and will have my garage change the oil when doing the State Inspection this month.
I am now going to try Valvoline SynPower 5W30 and see what happens. I am probably done using 0/5w20 from now on since I also have 133k miles on it.
Also going to clean the pcv for the hell of it.

 

If you never changed out your PCV, just replace it... Don't clean it. A new one from the dealer is only a couple dollars.


My current consumption on my xB is around .5qt every 6,000 miles with Pennzoil Ultra 5w20... If I use pennzoil platinum 0w20 I have minimal consumption. Current have 86,000 on my 08 xB.

Been using nothing but those two oils since I got the car. Did 5,000 mile changes at first until 60,000 and now do 2x per year regardless of mileage. Usually ends up at 7-8K for summer and 4-5 for winter.

 

Over 60k here, running usually 5w-20 or 0w-20, doesnt use any I can tell with 5-6k OCI's.

 

Class action lawsuit been filed against toyota for engine oil consumption issues with 08/09 xb among a list of other toyotas. This is a joke my car is burning all of its oil in 1500 miles. My car has 110,000 miles and it started around 90,000 and is getting worse. I will never buy another toyota or scion.

 

My 08 with 120k miles was burning 1 quart every 1000 miles using 5w-20. Switched to Mobil 1 synthetic 5w-30, surprisingly it stopped burning oil.
