You can search for and read the Class Action Complaint re: the 2AZ-FE engine's excessive oil consumption. I own (2) xB's and regret their purchase and will not buy another Toyota product again.
Toyota sent a "warranty Enhancement" notice and may rebuild the motor (bad rings) if the car burns (uses) 1 quart of oil within 1100-1300 miles-otherwise, less oil consumption is considered within spec. Go fish Toyota!
Other excessive consuming Toyota models include the Camry, Matrix, Solara, Corolla, RAV4, and Scion tC, depending on the model year.

I just proudly purchased a 20,000 mile used 2014 xB, and will continue, just like my old car, to check the oil once a week, and will change the oil every 3000 miles (contrary to Toyota's service advice of 7000 miles between changes)....and if it starts to burn a little oil, meh, I won't worry, cause there is no way I want a local dealership mechanic rebuilding my motor... most of those guys only know how to replace parts, not rebuild motors, so yeah, i'll just keep my xB and keep the oil topped up if it begins burning it....

I have one of the earliest built second generation xBs ever built and I guess I lucked out (build date 7/07). I didn't start consuming oil until 100k but I only use 1 qt every 5k miles which is acceptable to me.

not only acceptable, but completely normal!!

This is my point, all cars eventually burn oil, and people need to take 2 minutes away from texting their BFF's and posting their new Facebook status and check their damn oil....

I have a late 07 Scion xB2 ... Nautical blue ...165k miles .. Started to burn a little oil at 110k but the motor runs strong ... It idles smooth like a new car .. I'll see you guys @ 265!!! Guess the blues are lucky !!

Hello, was curious if anyone had the oil consumption problem with a 2010 or newer model? I know the service bulletin said specifically years 2008-2009 but was wondering if there was any overlap on the years. Looking at a 2010 xB manual....

I am 32 and have drove Honda's and Toyota's all my life. They have ALL used a little oil regardless of mileage. My current 2010 xB uses about a quart every 5K miles. So what. Just check your oil every week like you should any way and top it off. The car will run well past 200K miles all day every day. The fact that she is a little oil thirsty doesn't mean Shiz. These motors will run forever as long as you take care of them.

I bought a used 2008 xB in May of 2010. It has used between 1 and 2.5 quarts of oil between changes (every 3K) since I bought the car. It failed the consumption test & my Toyota dealership took the car in this morning to repair/rebuild the engine. They gave me a 2017 Camry as loaner while my car is serviced. I hope it is permanently fixed.
I also hope they get replacements for recalled passenger airbags faster than they got parts to repair the engine oil issues. That’s my new Scion problem.

I think your biggest worry will be whether or not they rebuild the engine properly...aint no way some dealership tech is ever rebuilding my engine due to some oil consumption, too risky....

They're doing pistons & rings. Now I'm nervous. I didn't consider the experience or quality dealer techs would have in doing a rebuild before bringing my leaky baby in. It's too late now, the bullet has left the barrel. I've had all the car's scheduled service done by a competent independent garage and have only gone to the dealer to have recall repairs done.

Toyota replaced my pistons in November of 2016. The car used a about a half a quart between the time Toyota replaced the parts and my next oil change. After that, it has used no oil or so little I could not tell from the dipstick.
The car is also more quiet. Not mechanical noise, but less outside sound or road noise like a gasket/seal/insulation was not seated properly or was missing before.
