Taking the Oil Consumption with Rod Knock?

Hi there!

I recently bought a 2011 Scion xB, just over a year ago. Anyway, a few weeks ago I developed a knocking sound in my engine. I drove home and had my boyfriend check it out. Looks like I had low oil and when he did an oil change he found metal debris in the oil. So, I went to the Toyota dealership to see what my options were.

Since, I am in the warranty period for the oil consumption issue and the dealership recommended an oil consumption test. My question is, should I do an oil consumption test when I have rod knock? I don't want to seize the engine and make things worse... and then what if it falls in spec.

Any advice will be very much appreciated. Thank you.

The oil level shouldn't be low unless it's burning or leaking out. The dealer seems willing to help, not sure what else you'll be able to do. Best thing you could do is report it so they have it on record. If the motor dies, hopefully you'll be able to get it warrantied. IIRC for that test they want to see how low you are after 800-1000 miles or so. Depending on the severity of the knock it might be okay to drive for a bit. Either way the motor is pretty much toast at this point so you might as well try to get it replaced under warranty by cooperating with the dealership.
