Is Toyota Brand Oil 0-20w bad?
I got an oil change for the first time since I have owned my preowned 2012 Scion xB. My friend who is a tech in a shop in Canada says the Toyota Brand oil is crap and he has cars coming in all the time to change out their oil from that. But I have been searching here, granted the posts were from 2011 and earlier but about the Gen 2 xB. They were praising the Toyota Brand oil and recommending it hand over fist. I thought maybe wherever Toyota Canada was getting the oil from was just crappy or something. I am in the States, Michigan. I am just trying to figure this out. I don't want to mess up my car. I appreciate any insight to this.

I work at NAPA and I just use the NAPA 0w20 synthetic oil. NAPA brand oil is simply Valvoline in NAPA bottles. So NAPA 0w20 synthetic is Valvoline SynthPower 0w20. ^_^
From my understanding talking to Toyota and Toyota technicians, Toyota uses Eneos Synthetic oil....which is FANTASTIC oil. Eneos is the company that created the 0w20 oil standard and Eneos Synthetic is actually 100% synthetic. I do believe that the national standard is that for your companies' oil to be labeled "Full Synthetic", it is required that the oil must meet a minimum of 15% synthetic by volume. Valvoline meets this standard while Mobile 1 bumps it ratio up to 28%. Hence the reason why Mobile 1 oil is commonly more expensive. I think Amsoil, Redline, LiquiMoly and Eneos are the only comsumer grade oils whos synthetic oil is 100% synthetic.

Ahhh! Okay...and just to add my friend explained to me what he meant, it was more so to do with the 0W20 and the oil getting into the cylinders then burning due to some piston seals or some kind of seals not being closed to prevent this, due to the oil being almost the same thickness as water. Cause I am like I doubt they would have sold me an oil for my car at the dealer I bought it from and they changed the oil on the car while it was on their lot for sale once before. I mean I know every place isn't always doing right. This dealer seems like they're more so helping people than trying to take advantage of them.
EDIT: some type of rings more so than seals...where the oil due to it being so lightweight can get in and start burning. I appreciate the answers. That's why I like communities like this!

Toyota brand 0W20 in the U.S. is actually made by Mobil. It is not the same as any Mobil branded 0W20. It is a Toyota specified additive pack. It is often regarded as one of, if not the best 0W20 oil available. Has a very high viscosity index ~236 I believe. I've used it in my 2010 since new. I'm at 87k now and runs like new. Excellent oil.
