Default Supercharger... Great Deal... Should I?

So I've heard some bad, and some good on the TRD S/C...

And I can acquire one for around 500 wig-wams, with everything but a ECU/Tune, but needs rebuilt.

I'm not a boost nut, or looking to achieve crazy hp numbers here, but something a little extra would be nice. So should I?

No. When installed properly brand new, it is just fine, but after that, just don't, seriously don't. While it could make your car a little more fun it is far more likely to completely compromise the reliability and enjoyment of owning your car. Totally not worth it. You're better off buying a used turbo kit than a used supercharger kit.

Wish i found a TRD Supercharger, Its different, limited and just enough extra power for little extra fun. Not jaw dropping turbo but its just enough.

They're "safer" in that they don't use hot exhaust gas to spin the turbine and generate linear boost with direct relation to engine RPMS so it is virtually impossible to overboost, but they're plaged with mechanical failures because they're rather delicate and installation is quite an ordeal, especially with a used kit, and if you're missing part, getting replacement ones is a PITA.

Well once he brings everything to the shop, we are going to see what's missing and what rebuild will cost. Going from there. May just rebuild and flip it. We'll see.

Dude...seriously...just walk the hell away from the kit. It will cost a lot of money and be riddled with problems and only make the car marginally faster assuming you even get it to run properly.

The only reason I had a supercharger on my tC was because they discontinued it, so I got my kit brand new in box for $1800, and installation at my dealership was only $600. And it did run flawlessly for a few years before I went turbo, but if you search, you will find many MANY threads about people, both with new and used kits, who are struggling to get the car to run right, get them rebuilt and still have problems etc.

I think the kit should be fine as long as you get a decent engine management system. Once you have that properly tuned to your specs rather than using a band aid for the ECU, you should be pretty satisfied!

Seriously, track record for used superchargers kits for this car says otherwise, it is also really hard to get parts, he'd be better off getting a used turbo kit because atleast then he can get replacement parts, or shop can better fab parts up.

Again. I am going to wait until he brings everything together. I have access to Toyota part numbers from my Engineering friend at Toyota in Hebron KY, and part discounts THROUGH Toyota (I work at the plant in Gerogetown Ky).

take a crack at getting some of those parts...they're really only sold as a kit, and considering the TRD supercharger was just a licensed vortech supercharger, they really aren't toyota parts that they have shelved up and stored anywhere.

Doesn't matter how well connected you might be, the TRD supercharger just isn't worth the time money and effort at this point.

I almost pulled the trigger on a s/c kit for my xb as well. I did research, and MORE research...I now own a nice used turbo kit.

It's just not worth it.

If you do get it, and get it working, more power to you! But I wasn't ready to take that chance. I would've had to install ceramic bearings to feel comfortable, and the price of that alone would have been a dealbreaker.

If you want to spend money for some nice increase, just go with the NST pulleys for the stock tc and a unichip. If you really want to get it, the kits are available from Gompka and kikcaffine; they're good guys. Not sure if they still own their s/c tC's anymore.
