Replaced all 4 speakers today with Polk Audio db651 speakers. The stockers, although Pioneers, were INCREDIBLY cheap looking/feeling. Front had a plastic cone and a halfway decent magnet, rears were a terrible pressed paper cone and a tiny magnet.

I THINK the reason the stockers sound halfway decent is the thorough sealing the have to the door frame and the door panel. You cannot really do that with aftermarket speakers.

Looks exactly like the stock speakers on the tC. Even the plastic mounts look the same.
Were the front speakers bolted or riveted into the door?

been thinking about getting the db651's, how do they sound, and do you have them amped?

They are running off of my Pioneer Avic D3, 22w RMS/channel. They seem to have a good deal more bass response than the stockers, but since I have a sub, the diff is not as dramatic as I would have liked. They are probably much more accurate than the stockers, I should turn off the sub for a while and let them shine.

Of course, it was moved from the kitchen to the basement circa '92.

Since then, I smear vaseline on the lens of any camera that might catch a glimpse...

Can we do these for the front? Polk db6500 component set
I was thinking of doing those and then Polk db650 for the rears, give them a decent amp to work with as well...

what spacers did you use on the install of the polks? Can you use the kit from elemental designs?

Could you post pics of the new speaker install?

you say they are a little better than stockers for sq? enough of a difference to do it now, or wait a while? have a sub in there now..

I am sure you could do components in the front, but you would have to find a place to mount the crossovers and the tweeters...thats why I passed on components; I am lazy.

I used the brackets that came with the speakers. I also had 2 different adapters from Crutchfield, but none of them match the stock bolt pattern. I put the bracket rings up to the door, I marked the holes, and I drilled 4 new holes. On the front, the speaker cutout was big enough to use speed clips with the screws, but in the rear, I just drilled a smaller hole and put the screws straight through the metal. Front and rear, you have to reroute the speaker wire to the inside of the door to pick up the contacts on the aftermarket speakers, hopefully the window frame doesn't own up on mine...

I am sorry, I did not take any pics of the install; I wasn't planning on a DIY...I should have though. It would give djbombsquad another thing to complain about...unbelievable.

I only listened for 5 minutes, but they do sound better. The problem is that the difference in clarity is overcome by the fact that the sub is hitting in the background. I am going to try it out with the sub off and see if I notice a bigger diff. I can say one thing for sure, they can hit much higher volume without distorting; but I don't really listen to music very loud.

I picked the 651 model because they have aimable tweeters, are completely diff/better in construction, and have better specs. I was going to go with 650s till I looked into the 651s.
