Default Auto Dimming Mirror with Compass and Homelink

Just putting it out there. I'm currently trying to build a hybrid mirror from a Scion accessory auto dimming mirror and a Lexus GS 350 auto dimming mirror with homelink. I am a Lexus tech and we have a problem with the glass on these mirrors getting lines instead of darkening up. So far I have taken both apart and put the Scion glass into the Lexus mirror. I've got it all working but it seems that it takes too much light on the front sensor to get it to go back to normal. The mirror wants to stay in dimmed mode. I doubt that anyone has tried this but if you have, any input would be helpful. When I get it figured out, I'll post pics!!

I got it figured out and installed today! I now have an auto dimming mirror with a compass and homelink! Here is a pic. The direction is hard to see because the original mirror has a spot cleared out behind the glass to see it better. You can see it fine during night but it is a little sketchy during the day.

That's pretty cool. What's homelink?

Homelink is a universal transmitter. Supposed to be able to be used for different things in your house like turning off home alarm or turning on lights. I've only seen it used for garage door openers. It's good because it has 3 different buttons and if you have 2 garage doors, like I do, you can set one button for each door.

Nice. My compliments to the chef. If you don't mind how did you figure out the problem?

It was working correct the whole time. I was testing it inside the shop and it wanted to stay dimmed. I thought this was wrong because the mirrors aren't dimmed in the cars when they are in the shop. I took it apart and was checking it out when one of my co-workers suggested I test it outside. His quote to me was "Well, when we pull cars into the shop, the headlights turn on. Maybe that is why your mirror stays dim." I tried it outside and it worked fine. Funny thing is, when I put it in the car in the shop, it doesn't dim. Crazy.

Hey as long as it works! Nice job. Now I'm off to secure a mirror and try it myself. Thanks for the idea. Was going to put a homelink in the drivers visor, but I like this idea better.

If you can find a homelink mirror at a junk yard that works or on ebay it can be wired up without going into the mirror. I am a Lexus tech and have access to the wiring dimagrams for Lexus, Scion, and Toyota. Let me know if you need any wiring help or pin connections. Some of the cars that have the mirror with homelink built in are GS350, GS460, 06 GS300, 06-07 GS430, and some IS250 and IS350 models.

I know this is a really old thread but I just purchased a 2015 xB and I am interested in this homelink mirror with auto-dim and compass for my xB. I am installing PT374-02090 mirror to get the wiring piece ready so I am guessing it’s just a matter of moving wires around in the homelink mirror to match up with the xB auto-dim mirror. Any information would really help.
