Electrochromatic mirror

I have an electrochromatic rear view mirror and it has an orange light that shines down on the shift console when it is dark outside. Has anyone ever taken one of these apart to change the light inside of it to a different color? I am not sure if it is an LED or not since I have never seen one taken apart before. Thanks!!

Is an electrochromatic mirror the same thing as an auto dimming mirror?

Yes.

Actually, Sparks was what made me wonder, because they have an auto dimming mirror for 105 something, and an electrochromatic mirror for 60. The descriptions I read of the EC mirrors is that they have the same stuff that your glasses that change color in light have behind the glass, and the auto dimming mirrors claim to have a "sensor" that dims the mirror - I suppose mechanically from what I was gleaming from a website on getting them from junkyards (it was a guide on what would and would not fit on a specific vehicle and why).

So I *think* they're different. Some outside mirrors have the EC coating on some vehicles from what I gleamed.

Not sure about the EC/auto dimming difference, but if you look at the pdf install instructions on TRDsparks for the EC mirror, they're fully connected to the electrical system which makes me think they include the light sensor.

Electrochromatic mirrors are "auto-dimming"
The photosensor on the mirror detects bright light, and uses the electrochromatic coating on the mirror to tint it. They're not seperate things, they go together. I've never heard of any other way to make a "auto-dimming" mirror, other than electrochromatic glass.

Huh, I figured it was a mechanical thing with the light sensor the way the one site was explaining it. *grin* Guess I was wrong. So TRD Sparks is essentially just offering one expensive one and calling it an auto dimming mirror, an d one cheap one and calling it an electrochromatic one on their Scion accessories stuff. I wonder why they choose to call them different things?

Hmm, from the two available mirrors, its not clear what the difference is. They look the same to me...
