Not the A/C Blower Motor..

I am here hoping to get some helpful answers before a new car is cheaper than continuing to pay mechanics with less than optimal troubleshooting and research skills. :flame:

2009 Scion xB.

Symptom: Blower Motor control switch works at 1-2 great, 3-4 are 95% failed. last year it was just 4 that didn't work.

I can sometimes get 3&4 to work by pressing the knob in and rotating it back a little from where it should be set.

I believe this is the knob itself, or perhaps a wire or something attached to the knob. Setting #2 is adequate for 90 degree temperatures, so the system as a whole is fine. Once it is over 110 outside, this won't cut it.

Logic : It tells me the motor is fine, afterall setting #2 is working enough to cool in Arizona with the ever present sun and heat.. even if it takes a few minutes to get there. Logic also tells me it is not the resistor because I am not stuck with 4 (High) speed only.

Can anyone offer input on this before I pay someone (again) to fix this silly little problem for me?

In theory they changed (at least charged) for the blower motor and resistor to be changed, leaving me with the exact same problem, minus a few hundred dollars. They even seem to have replaced the leaves in my cabin air filter and the dust into/on top of the blower motor for me (free of charge).

If the likely solution to this problem can be handled by someone with a brain, who can barely hold a coffee cup with their hands, please speak up. I'll gladly not pay someone $100 an hour to do this repair.

Thank you for your help.

It sounds like it's the control dial that is going out. See if you can find a set of A/C controls at a junkyard or on eBay want swap them.

Thank you for the confirmation. That is what I was thinking. I found the blower control dial online a few places. It has been chewing me up all weekend :)
