19" TRD wheels a joke
Got an rs8 xb got the 19s in gray they are ridiculously cheap that I have Come to find out, they are peeling a and the clear coat looks milky and I went to the dealership and they say it's cause By rock chips the service guy got down on the ground to look at it with a magnifying glass to see if it was rock chips which I thought was ridiculous anybody else have any similar problems to this they didn't warranty them and no I am stuck with wheels that look like sh**
Screw that . Go back to the dealer ! Did you buy the XB new . Park your car outside the dealer with a sign telling others . Had a problem with a plastic dash trim . Told me it was from the sun . Gave them my thoughts on a sign hanging off my XB in front of the lot . Fixed that moment , wow how about that .
Hey dude I had the exact same issue with my TRD rims on my 012. Peeling around the lip. The dealership did switch all four out, not at the same time but as they went bad. Then a fifth one started and I was ____ed. I wrote an email to dealer manager and told him about all the time I wasted with these BRAND NEW RIMS! Of course he wrote back and passed it on to someone else.... Waited waited heard nothing, I wrote again and not nice. Next thing I know the regional parts manager called me and good willed me a new set of 5Axis rims, couldn't believe it. Not a lot of customer service like that anywhere. So definitely get on that dealer to back their product!
I just painted mine, sanded and taped off the chrome. And I did see that they are made in China, not Japan. But mine where used and the owner before me didn't know the meaning of avoiding curbs. But the original paint on them were in good condition, even after I sanded them. On an Rx300 once owned I had some chrome Lexus wheels that the chrome peeled off after less than a year. With chrome and powder coating, with a lot of curves and nooks and crannies on certain types of wheels if they weren't prepped properly, they are going to peel. Not every wheel can be treated right all the time, but the fact that they were made in China, it isn't surprising some of you are having peeling issues.
I have some friends in the PC biz as well, and they will do Gloss Black powder for 200 bucks a set..... they work out of their garages too, and if they don't sell powder coating, they don't pay their bills..... not exactly a good business model. If I have a customer that is all about price, and doesn't give a hoot about quality, I send them to those guys. Quality is something you gotta pay for.....
In blue-collar Memphis, there's a bonafide powder-coater (Rick's) who does premium quality work for $70/ea one color, including clear coat on metallics and stripping, for pricing comparison.
SCOTTRODS' $80/ea price is in that ball park.
I bought a 3rd-hand set of 19" TRD wheels and, yes, the clear coat bubbles, cracks and flakes. Kinda like the xB paint's chip-resistance...
While I went back to old-school 17" JDM wheels, the good news is that the TRD wheels look a hella lot better repainted monochromatic (sorry, I don't recall who's pic to give proper credit):
