2008 xB saved my life
Long story short, driving home late last night on a dark road surrounded by forest, I saw a huge deer coming out into the road as I turned around a corner. I had almost no time to apply the brakes to stop in time,
and I ended up running off the road and into a huge oak tree. I also know now to just plow right through a woodland animal in that situation.
A few extra details:
-Speed at impact was right around 50mph, speed limit is 45 on that road.
-Had my seatbelt on and my airbag deployed, but my head did not make contact with the bag (seatbelt did a great job at holding my +200lb body in the seat)
-aside from a lot of muscle strains and pain, I have no serious injuries aside from maybe a broken ankle.
This is my first accident ever, and obviously I hope it's my last. But seeing how my car took that 50mph blow to that giant tree makes me astonished as to how lucky I am to have such relatively minor injuries.
I was contemplating on buying a new car next year, leaning heavily toward the FR-S... Quite honestly it doesn't matter to me anymore what model it is as long as its a Scion... OK maybe not the iQ...

Wow, glad your okay! That one is very much "ouch" worthy!
I totaled my 2010 Ford Focus SE before getting into the xB I am in and as much as I hated that car (it was constantly having little issues) it did save my life.
So, it is nice to see the Scions are worthy of just that as well!
Once again, glad your okay!

Thanks for all the kind responses. Definitely feeling more pain now 34 hours after the crash than before, mainly from all the adrenaline gone. Still, looking at those pictures, I am extremely lucky to have been able to get out of the car right after the crash. I'm surprised the engine didn't end up more in the cabin than it did... I miss my box already...

Glad to hear you're alright!
I remember reading/watching somewhere that the engines are engineered to have the mounts break downward towards the ground instead of in the cabin.

I'm sure that the tree wasn't looking so good afterward, too. Glad to know that you're okay.
I wonder how much worse it would have been if you did hit the deer. Given that the deer was huge, it may have gone thru the windshield and entered (forcefully, I think) into the passenger compartment. Seen too many deer vs. car pictures with sad human outcomes!

Glad to hear you're alive. That Box took one hell of a hit.
Makes me feel a bit safer in mine now. Lets see what you get into next!

I crash tested my '72 BMW 2002 many years ago, sadly, but it kept me safe, too. This reminds me of an accident back in the early 70's when a guy hit an 18" oak tree squarely in the center of the nose in his BMW 2002. The headlights were facing each other, more or less just like yours. The submarining engine installation has pretty much become standard in well engineered cars these days AFAIK. It is an enormous gain in safety. Much as I don't want to crash test my Box, I feel safe in it.
Glad you're well. Hope the pain goes quickly. You certainly have something to be thankful for Thurs.
