Default xB Gen2 still considered Reliable?

Hello all,

Miss my old Element and have been searching for some sort of replacement. Been reading reviews and researching the xB Gen2. Lots of love out there for these little guys.
I was getting excited about starting to look for one. Then I ran across some threads here and found other info on issues regarding oil consumption.

How concerned should I be if I am looking at 2014 or 2015 low mile models?

Many thanks JP

I bought my daughter a 2008 Scion xB around 2 years ago. Has been a great car. She has driven it to Colorado and Florida from Texas within the last 6 months. Seems to be very reliable (I'm the one who works on it). I will say it does consume oil, but not to any alarming degree, just keep your eye on it.

I believe in 2010 is when they resolved the oil consumption issue

@Big_Jim Hi, I had an oil consume issue in the past. About 2-3 years ago I switch from non-synthetic oil to full synthetic. Then to AMS oil which is 100% full synthetic.
In the past years I clean the interior of the engine with oil detergents and with car mechanic recommendation (Kerosene flush).
Today the car oil consumption has been reduced for some unknown reason. I have 186K Miles and I am looking to drive this car to 0.5 Million Miles.

Thank you.

Scion xB 2004 show-off in the Corn Field !!! Perform like a 4x4 SUV car.

Perhaps, but maybe you got last of oil-burning engine?

The type of oil used over lifetime of car makes huge different. DO NOT ever use dyno-oil, full-synthetic ONLY!!! Changing oil frequently doesn't work because dyno-oil burns from 1st mile you use it and clogs your rings. Preventing them sealing fully and resulting in burning-oil and smoky exhaust. Not to mention loss of power and lower MPG.

Full-synthetic has properties that really helps engines. Such as higher detergent levels to keep engine clean. Also higher flash-point, so it doesn't burn in cylinders as easily. And low NOACK, which is how much ash and sludge is left behind when oil is burnt in cylinders. Full-synthetic burns lots less and whatever is burnt, leaves very little deposits behind.

It might be too late for your engine since it probably got quick-lube low-quality oil in past. The sludge and deposits are already in there. Try using PEA-based fuel-system cleaner in every tank along with Mobil-1 full-synthetic oil. Might take a while to clean out, but it may improve.

You're welcome! Use PEA fuel-system cleaners in each tank:

- Red Line SI-1
- Techron Concentrate Plus
- Gumout All-in-One <-- this may be off list soon, lowest amounts of PEA
- 3M Max Strength Fuel System Cleaner #08814
- Royal Purple Max Atomizer 18000
