buying new car- what to expect?

hi, i've been all over this site since deciding on the 2008 xb mt in silver. and thanks for answering my questions.

this will be my first new car purchase. the last car i bought was at an auction....

with pure pricing, i'm expecting this will be easier than normal dealerships.

i live in los angeles, sales is 8.25%

mrsp- 15640
destination- 580
ttl- 1509
total- 17739

has anyone in southern california gotten a better price?

they said there were no other fees. is this what others are paying? or do they try to pad with doc fees?

Whispaz 07-30-2007 01:51 AM

maybe you'll have better luck in the Regional section. You also have to include a DOC fee (differs from dealer to dealer) and some places have an Advertising fee that is placed on all cars (not controlled by the dealership)

EDIT: Make sure you dont have to pay a Prep fee. Some dealerships may put this on you but it doesnt make sense that you should pay for it. Call different dealers in your area and ask what is the price Out of the Door (aka bottom line price)

Also be prepared to be beraged with odd and ends protection programs when you go through the financing office (whether you pay cash or not!). They have close to $6K worth of extended and enhanced this-&-that to pummel you with at the very last minute. It will be worthwhile to ask to get that info up front before deciding on the purchase.

i just emailed several local dealers asking for their otd price. i've figured out how much ttl should be.

hoping the place i test drove is the best b/c its the closest.

Before tax + license mine was $17,3xx and that included mt, spoiler, upgradeded stereo, and floor/cargo mats. Though it is pure pricing I still noticed a few hundred dollar difference between different dealers I was going to. Let me know if you wanna know the dealers I went to in Los Angeles.

dont forget to include floormats in your calculations, its impossible to get a scion in cali wthout them, they come with every scion, regardless if you ask for them or not.

if you get the 7 year warranty, do you get free oil changes for 7 years?

Whispaz 07-30-2007 01:26 PM

oil changes are in most cases not included with the warranty. Usually it just covers the powertrain. I'm sure if you negotiate you can get some free oil changes out of them

What is this? Tax + License fee (DMV registration)? How are you calculating that?

Whispaz 07-30-2007 05:57 PM

In Mass tax is 5% of the selling price. Title is $86 for new plates or $69 (i may me off a couple of $$$) for a transfer

Wow, that's pretty cheap. I'm in so cal and I've always estimated 10% of selling price for Tax+Lic.

California reg. is pretty crazy. We just registered my parents RX350 in souther cali; i think it was around $350

sayonara 07-30-2007 07:25 PM

if i wer u i wud apply at a credit union bank. they can even look for the car u like, and less doc fees. also the rate wud be much lower than the dealer. not unless u know someone at d dealership who can hook u up.

freckles01 07-30-2007 08:07 PM

you can find the cost to ttl on the ca dmv website under fee calculator. just plug in the numbers and it figures it out for you.

Cool. Automatic is 17180 + 155 for floormats = 17335.

If I use that with SanBernardino County where sales tax is 7.75% I get 176 for total registration fees plus tax of 1343 = grand total DMV fees of 1519.

17335
+1519
=$18854

are there any other misc fees added to that?

Whispaz 07-30-2007 09:36 PM

i cant think of anymore other than those in post 2

XBFred 07-30-2007 09:40 PM

$35 documentation fee

Whispaz 07-30-2007 10:02 PM

my doc fee was $95. Other places are $195. at the Acura dealer I worked at it was $300

freckles01 08-01-2007 06:56 AM

isn't the doc fee negotiable b/c they are bs padding? i thought dest/handling fee includes all that. is there also a tire fee?

and can those car mats be removed from the price? its an accessory.

Whispaz 08-01-2007 12:35 PM

never heard of a tire fee. the DOC fee is basically their cost of doing business. Mass dealers have to store the records for 7 years, the finance, paperwork, etc... You pay for what they do basically. I've had some people negotiate it so it is possible
