Default Hitch Rack Question

Hi,
I was just wondering if anyone had any luck using a hitch rack for bicycles on the new boxes. I was thinking of putting a 1 1/4" hitch, from ebay, on my DW's 2009 box. Also do you think this will kill my gas mileage? We take frequent trips from Florida to North Carolina. (Breaking the bike down and putting it inside is a possible option but that would eat up alot of my cargo space.)

On an unrelated note, we're now a 2 box household. I inherited the DF's 2006 white xB and she has a teal 2009!

I have the 1 1/4 " hitch and use a Yakima Double Down 5. It carries up to 5 bikes. Never had any issues as of yet. I have not yet used it on a longer trip, but I don't think it would cause a problem.

Works great! I use a Curt Manufacturing hitch bought off ebay and a Thule bike rack from Amazon.

Nice racks! I have one of the nicer hatch mounted racks available (the Saris Bones 2) and I have a cheap hitch-mounted rack . The Saris rack keeps the bikes secure and even straps the frames to keep them from swaying. My hitch rack merely hangs up the bikes, letting them sway.

The problem with the Saris is that it touches the car. I plan to put some clear bra material on the spots where wear might occur.

My other problem is that I have not mounted a hitch to my xB (yet). if you were me would you get a hitch and ditch the hatch-mounted rack? Do those hitch-mounted racks wobble around? My hitch rack wobbled like crazy on my old SUV, but that was with a 2" adapter on it. Any thoughts?

I have the Thule 954 Ridgeline 4-Bike Hitch Mount Rack (www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000MRFH36) and it does not wobble around at all. The bikes are also secured to the rack at 3 points, which keeps them from swaying into each other. It's a very well-design product, but not cheap ($305.10 shipped from Amazon).

Mine has an 'Anti-rattle' type pin & works perfectly.no scratches, rubbing or marring or swaying.. holds the frame down, then the wheels sit in a rack & are strapped down as well.. very happy!
