Maint required light?

Well you know how when you take the car to the dealer a light comes on to let you know when you need to get service? Well mines been on and I would love to get it turned off. How do I do that?

GQQSE13 09-09-2010 08:47 PM

if you put the key in the ignition, hold the button that resets the mileage on the car and turn it to the key to the 'accessory' position while holding on to it you will see a bunch of dashes flashing and eventually disappear and mileage appears again. after that you should be good to go

AndreyCo 09-09-2010 08:48 PM

afaik it only comes on when you need to change your oil (every 5k miles). obviously it's not a good idea to just turn it off and NOT change your oil.

the light can be reset by following these steps
1. turn key to ON
2. cycle odometer display to TRIP A
3. turn key to OFF or ACC (away from ON)
4. while holding the odometer cycle button, turn key to ON
5. wait for 5 seconds while the odometer display blinks - - - - - & the MAINT REQ'D light
6. you're done!

Cough, manual, cough... :D

DJ_FroZone 09-09-2010 08:57 PM

does it only come on for oil? lady at the dealer said that i should come get it changed eever 10k cause we use synthetic oil.... i went uhhh sure?

CIONIDE 09-09-2010 09:02 PM

As the 5 flashing dashes go away one at a time, each lost dash represents 1000 miles. If you let go of the odo cycle button after only one dash disappears, then the light will come back on in 1000 miles... after 3 dashes disappear then 3000 miles... after all 5 dashes disappear then 5000 miles.

Stop going to that dealer. Completely.

Then read your owner's manual.

As for the light... it is only a preprogrammed interval light. By default it is set for 5000 miles (Scion's maintenance interval). So say you start at 0 miles... at 4500 miles it will start flashing when you turn on the car and then go off. At 5000 miles it will stay on all of the time until you reset it. As soon as you reset it, the 4500/5000 thing starts all over again.

It in no way knows if your car actually needs an oil change (or any other maintenance), it is just a reminder light set to a preprogrammed interval (that can be changed if needed). Nothing more.

^^^ yea thats what i tought. it was the receptionist lady not hte service guys. lol so when i can drive imma take it down there for the "last oil and check up" basically im a tad nervous that since i have I/H/E they won't want to touch it. but if they don't mind that would be great.

if you use full synthetic you dont need to change it but about every 10k but you still need to change the filter every 5k. and i agree with ack, that if these aren't the free dealer oil changes, i'd do them yourself. i never changed the oil on my previous cars but the tc i do all of the time now as easy as it is.

AAG 09-10-2010 04:48 PM

The toyota oil filters are very good and are fine for 10k miles.

strtrcril87 09-10-2010 05:52 PM

10K, really?
I'll keep changing mine every 3K...

You are wasting money on oil and filters at that mileage. Dino oil can go 5k and synthetic oil is capable of 10k+ depending on your driving conditions.

www.bobistheoilguy.com is the webiste I visit on a regular basis and many people there have done 10k miles on toyota filters.

I got one question for ya man... How do you do that? You're like "the King's personal see'er" of the scion world! I sit in awe of your knowledge.

:silly:

Actually, it all started with just reading the owners manual cover-to-cover when I first bought the xB, and then learning how to use the SEARCH function on this site. Most of the questions that get asked have been covered before in various threads since we're basically into the 4th model year of the 2nd-Gen.

CIONIDE > Search button :P

Thanks, mine just started flashing a couple days ago -- not anymore though :P!

I just changed mine to full synth at 4500 miles (first change).
An old friend of mine owned and raced a 911. He ran Royal Purple and told me about his testing it. He would change his filter every 1000 miles (wait for it) and replace lost oil. He would pull a sample and send it for analysis.
He did that for 100,000 miles. He finally told me that at that point even though the oil was still in 'safe limits' he did a full oil change.
I'm not saying that Royal Purple is the best or anything like that, I'm only saying that a good synth and good clean filters will last much longer than people think.
