Moving iPod jack
 

This weekend I'm going to move my iPod jack into the inside of the center storage compartment. Does ne one want DIY? If so I'll spend the extra time taking all the photos as I go.

I think some people have already done similar projects, but no-one has posted a DIY for it yet. It would be awesome to have one as I'm about to do this.

Have you already bought the plastic plug to fill in the old spot? If so what was the cost.

Definitely could use a step-by-step DIY on this. I can see a lot of people doing this, and have seen similar things done (search ipod to glovebox). Scion put it in such a clumsy spot.

I am definetly planning on moving the iPod and AUX jacks inside the clove box. I really need to add another power outlet in there for my Cell.

Does anyone know the voltage that is on the line for the iPod connection?

the plastic covers were $3 something a piece.

I'm not moving mine to the glovebox though... I'm just gonna flip it around so it comes out the inside of the "armrest" compartment. It's a bit wearing to unplug the iPod every time I park.

Voltage for the ipod is probably 5V since thats whats supplied for USB which is how ipods get charged... i'd have to double check with the multimeter... if I remember to do it i'll post. :)

I really want to do this. I want to put the AUX in there also. 2 more switch locations! :clap:

Thats what I thought. I was hoping it may come in as 12v (wishful thinking even though I know better). Guess I'll have to run the wires for the extra power port back to the dash.

There are instructions, but only a few pics.

I wanted to relocate my jacks to the center armrest console, but apparently it's really difficult to cut holes in that area because the space is so tight.

If anyone does this, I'd love it if they could take photos for a DIY. Thanks!

I've done the relocation to the glovebox. You could easily route the wire to the interior of your center console, but I think flipping them would be tough. It's pretty tight up in the console. The back side of the housings are also deeper than you think. If you could flip them it would be tough to have anything in the old spots other than blank covers.

Yea I haven't looked in there yet,...but if it fits how it is now it should fit turned around. Well, I'll find out tomorrow :)

Mike: In the original iPod jack location, is there a bracket or something in the inside that holds the jacks in place? If not I may have to do some gluing.

Also... all I want in the old spots is the blank covers. That was the worst place to put those jacks.

Looks in the console. you can see where it's offset. I forget now which one is which, but one is considerably longer than the other on the backside.

The best way to describe this is there are two sets of wires with a female plug, they go into the back of the receptacles/jacks/sockets (whatever you want to call them ;-). You plug your ipod and aux jack into the other sides.

Therse receptacles/jacks/sockets snap into the double housing in the center console.

The double housing itself also snaps into the center console.

So the catch is, you must use the receptacles/jacks/sockets when relocating. The wire on the ipod side is female and the receptacle/jack converts it to a male/external pin side.

So any place you move them. The two sockets must go with the wiring.

This is why I ended up going the route to the glovebox. I wanted the sockets to still be "mounted" and look clean/factory looking.

Hope this helps. The best thing I can tell you is to just pry off the double housing and look at what your dealing with. You can yank this out without really having to disassemble everything

Well I'm almost finished... I cut my holes a little too big so I'm gonna have to put some glue on the inside to seal it. I would be done but it started raining so I'll have to finish this afternoon or tomorrow.

Ok, done. I'm pretty new here so is there a certain board to post DIY or should I just post it in the xB2 "ice and interior"?
