Default mystery no power issue

2009 XB was recently in the shop for brakes (dont look at me funny, between toddlers and a prohibitive hoa... its life right now) and had the mechanic do a full check, all good.
this morning (not cold, maybe mid 50s) left to take my husband to work, 30mins in stopped for gas. He was driving and it annoyed me that he didnt engage the clutch so I did. details only in hopes they help here.
After getting gas he went to start the car and nothing. no interior lights no dashboard ... no click or turnover. So i figure the steering column is locked but its not. we of course had just emptied the car for an event and didnt have anything - so i smacked the battery, checked a few fuses - but didnt have the manual to find which might help and service was slow on my phone. Got the dash to flash but still car wouldnt start/turn on.
Locked steering column, unlocked, and it started up - super shaky at first like it was running too lean but then evened out and i deove for two hours just fine. Havent shut it off as I want to get home first.
I did notice that when it started the clock had changed as if the battery was unplugged.
any ideas, why, what to check, where to start?
I can do a lot myself but we only have one car so is this one's down I'm a bit screwed on going to get parts

Sounds like a loose battery terminal, either positive or negative. Either that or the main bus fuse, but most likely the battery terminals.
