Definately get it replaced at a scion dealership. I took my insurance companies advice and got it done through some glass company in the area and they did an awful job.
And sorry to hear about the crack!

Wow, that rock hit high on the windshield. Sorry to hear that though, our windshields are still fairly steep so seems inevitable, atleast we don't have FJ Cruisers whose windshields are almost at 90*. Keep us posted on the windshield replacement.

i always hear rocks/pebbles hit my windshield and i immediately check the glass to make sure its not chipped. the windshield is pretty flat so instead or really being deflected after hitting the glass just stops the rock and it becomes more prone to cracking. get it replaced before it spreads all over or worse.

It's been a long time since I posted this recommendation, but it seems prudent once again...
xB windshields love rocks, and lose the battle every time. I recommend everybody look into lowering your comprehensive insurance deductible to $100. I have State Farm (they don't offer separate windshield insurance), and the premium increase to go from $500 comp. deductible down to $100 was only $20 more every 6 months. This means that when I crack/break one, even if the replacement cost is $400, and it happens once in the next 7-1/2 years, I'm ahead financially. Odds are pretty good that I'm going to come out ahead on this one, plus I'll only have to come up with $100 when it does happen. Additionally, most insurance companies don't raise your rates for a comp. claim.

I have one pea size rock chip and 3 of the little dime size star cracks; all from rocks kicked up by other cars or trucks on the freeway. I won't be getting the windshield replaced until one of them turns into a real crack, or I get ready to trade it in. I hate the concept of breaking the factory windshield seal if I don't have to.

Always get a rock chip repaired asap to prevent spreading...I would always suggest to have a windshield repair only company fix it and not use a company that does replacements also...usually the repair only company will do a much bettet job and if you have full coverage your insurance will be for a chip repair witb no deductible!

That depends on the company... State Farm gave me a great rate for my $100 comp deductible, and won't raise my rates for comp claims, but they won't pay for windshield repairs either (not even a portion of it like $25 or $50). Since I have one chip and 3 star cracks, I had a package deal quote of $100 for all 4 from a specialty repair shop (like you suggested), but they also said that they couldn't guarantee that the windshield wouldn't completely crack when attempting the repairs, and they wanted me to sign a waiver releasing them from liability if it did end up cracking. I decided that when I'm ready, I'll just pay the same $100 for a comp claim and a brand new windshield.

I tell my customers about the risk of it spreading while doing the repair also...I mean its glass and its already broke..however less then 2% (1 or 2 a yr) will split out and I fix hundreds of windshields per year. I offer a lifetime warranty against it spreading once I've completed the repair. I also always tell customers to expect atleast a 70% cosmetic improvement and a 100% structural improvement. You will always see something after the chip was repaired...usually looks like a small bug gut or water stain.

ok so the toyota guy told me that we have to go through insurance. and what ricersux said could be true. He told me we have to go through insurance, safelight will do the install and we need to ask/demand OEM glass. thank god our deductible is only 100 so much better than paying 900 just for the windshield!

Slavelite is a terrible company to deal with. Insurance companies tell the glass shop/body shop what they will pay and 90% will NOT pay for oem toyota glass...toyota doesnt manufacturer glass...there are only 4 or 5 manufacturers and they then rebadge and sell to all the car companies. Get in the phonebook and find your own glass shop and insure they use either Pilkington glass or PGW glass...they are both considered an OEM provider. Never let the insurance company tell you where to take your car. Do your research then tell the insurance company who you want to use. PM me if you want some specifics to how this process works and why you dont want slavelite anywhere near your ish!
