Heck no spend the extra on the high grade fuel I have stock in oil and could use it to go up a little more.

Unless you have a turbo or supercharger then let the knock sensors do their job lol
Even in my modified turbo VW I ran regular until I was going to track it, then I'd do 2-3 tanks to get it all flushed out.

Yes--do a search on Top Tier to see which brands are good.

Hapa88 07-06-2007 01:11 AM

"Top Tier" is mostly marketing hype. A typical consumer will probably not notice any difference in the gas they use:

You could be right...But For a couple of cents more I'll stick with the name brand  Really don't need any of that Boot-Leg stuff in my Baby

Well, there's grades of gas and there's levels of detergents in gas.

If you're asking between the different grades (87, 89, and 91 octane), you would only need to use the lowest grade that prevents your engine from knocking (pre-ignition). Modern engines will retard timing if knocking occurs, this will obviously degrade some performance. However, you won't need 91 octane if your engine isn't knocking when using 87.

With our normally aspirated 4 cylinders, I don't see a need for anything greater than 87. Of course, you could do your own analysis and run several tanks of each grade and see which yields you better mileage (assuming you have consistent driving habits and conditions across all tanks).

That being said, I won't buy from no- or lesser- named companies. I'll use 87 from Shell, Mobil, etc.
