Default Inner and outer tie rod replacement

I have looked everywhere and cannot seem to find an answer to this. My mechanic says my inner tie rods are loose and need to be replaced on my 2009 xB. He says the information he is finding is saying that he cannot do this, that as of 2006 the inner tie rod is part of the steering rack and that the entire rack must be replaced. Is this true?

Have you called the dealer?

If they're loose, tighten them...

I'm curious about what the symptoms were that lead to determining that they were loose.

Maybe not "loose", but "shot", ie wheel wiggle room because of the bushing. Obviously a mechanic will say "loose" and assume you know what he's talking about.

Update: The ball joints have most likely had it too. The car has over 115,000 miles on it. The back left tire is wearing badly (there's a terrible thump at 30-35 mph that is just getting worse), and my mechanic says the driver's side inner tie rod is definitely "loose" and needs replacing. So yeah, he probably means "shot."

I called the dealer and it's true that after the 2006 model it is impossible to replace the inner tie rods without replacing the entire steering rack. The outer tie rods, however, CAN be replaced separately. Toyota gave me a quote of $1200 just to replace the steering rack. My mechanic can do the entire job, including the ball joints, for $900. Of course, I'll need two new tires and a wheel alignment.

What are they charging for you for the rack alone? You can get a rack from a junk yard for like $50, from an xB that was in a rear end collision or something, or blown motor. Otherwise, a new rack can cost quite a bit. And to save even more, racks aren't that hard to install

Default Whoever told you that the inner tie rods can't be replaced is wrong

Sounds like someone wanted to sell you a rack and pinion.

I have been it the business for over 6 years now. And there isn't a rack and pinion that tie rods cant be replaced.

That doesn't mean that all tie rods are available yet. Some are not available in the aftermarket yet because they are to new.

Default 2008 scion xb inner tie rod

Well, I looked everywhere and never found an Inner Tie Rod end, Toyota said it was serviced with a rack and pinion, which was 988.00 just for the rack.
Mine has a little movement in it too, I'm going to keep looking but it's not looking good.

Toyota does not service the inner tie rods on most models that use a column-based electric power steering setup. That said, other companies do offer the parts, they can just be a bit difficult to track down.

555 is an OE supplier in Japan and their part number for the inner tie rods is SR-T540. If you do some searching online you can likely find a supplier where you can order them from.

The boots and outer tie rods are available from Toyota.

45535-49015 - Boot, Inner Tie Rod (Qty: 2)
45046-19415 - Rod, Outer Tie RH

45047-19215 - Rod, Outer Tie LH
90179-15006 - Nut, Jam (Inner/Outer Tie Rod) (Qty: 2)
