Default 2008 Scion xD, battery dead and doors won't open

Hi guys,

I am posting this for my gf, since I am out of town now so I am not able to check on her car, but according to her, the car won't manually unlock even sticking in the key, she just hears some kind of noises when she turns the key. She has tried both sides and the hatch but nothing worked.

The thing is, she is not even sure if the battery is dead, just that when she presses the keyless entry it won't beep or make any sounds.

Can someone please enlighten me how she can unlock her doors?

if only there was a "like" botton.....

dont think sscion or any car maker would allow somthing like to happen when the battery dies. kinda a big deal. her key could be bent in a way the lock dosent see it right or maybe she has some anti theft device that was installed wrong?

that doesnt seem possible.. when u use the key, its a mechanical linkage..
one lock maybe messed up... but both? I don't think so..
does the xD even have two key locks or just one.. the garage is too far to check right now.

^^ I'm not 100% positive, but I believe that to be true. Even if the battery is dead the key lock is almost always, while low-tech, mechanical and should work. It will only unlock the door the key is physically in, I would think it should still work.

agreed, either it is the wrong car or the wrong key.
The door lock is mechanical, so even with a dead battery it would unlock.

Is she turning the key in the right direction? One way will lock, the other direction will unlock the door.

Not being flippin, it's just that sometime it's that simple!

Yea, the key unlock is mechanical, absolutely no reason that it wouldn't unlock if the battery was dead. Hell, take the battery out and you'll still be able to unlock the door.

my gf called the car dealership and the mechanics there had no idea, so finally got the locksmith over and they told her it's not a mechanical lock but electronic system just like those of bmw. Normally when there is a slight bit of battery it will still unlocks the door, in her case, the battery was completely dead so it was not unlock-able.

They charged the battery and the doors opened.

^^^ X2 ... that's nuts.. I wouldn't have thought that would be the case on our cars.. but I have to admit, with the keyless entry, I can't honestly remember the last time I used the physical key lock to lock/unlock my doors. lol.
..... after-thought.... even with that, my battery was never dead so wouldn't have known even then. lol

my xD only has one keylock on the drivers side..
however.. the keylock does seem to be just an electrical switch to
activate the lock.

i figured it was like the xB, it doesn't have key openings in the passenger doors but it is still mechanical.
if you turn the key to unlock twice (and there is power) it will unlock all the doors and hatch as if you hit the button twice.

I had the xD battery out of the car to install some lights a while back for the better part of a day. i want to say i never had a problem locking or unlocking the doors while the battery was out and i had to step away for some time. but i honestly do not remember that well.

That's weird...The other day I went out to my xD and hit my remote to unlock the doors and nothing happened...I thought the remote battery was dead so I grabbed the spare remote and hit that one and the same thing happened, nothing...Now I'm remembering I probably left the front map light on for the last two days (I manually turn them on because I have the ragtop and I had to remove my dome light and I don't have any lights that come on when I open my doors) and i'm thinking great my battery is totally DEAD...I use the key and open the drivers door without any issues...Try to start the car, nothing happens and nothing turns on...Yep, battery is completely dead...I put the cables on and try to jump the car with the wifes xB but it doesn't turn over, it's that DEAD...I leave the cables on for about 10 minutes and try it again and my car finally starts...

the manual key should always work dead or full bettery.

because basically the manual key lock is like a padlock...

unless like someone said she might have anti theft key for the car? which is include manual key

Default Troller and some readers ate all the bait!

If you cannot open the doors, how the heck can you open the hood,

To Charge the DEAD Battery, OSMOSIS??

I HAVE HAD THE SAME PROBLEM, BUT THE KEY ALWAYS OPENS THE DRIVER DOOR (WHICH IS THE ONLY ONE WITH A MANUAL KEY ENTRY. Mine is harder cause I have installed a keylock plug which makes it impossible to insert the key without first removing the device.

The troller is lauging out loud by now...
Seriously now, WTF?

From the Service Manual:

Power Door Lock Control System

SYSTEM DESCRIPTION

1. POWER DOOR LOCK CONTROL SYSTEM DESCRIPTION

a. The power door lock system locks/unlocks all the doors. The master switch and the door control switch on the passenger door send lock/unlock request signals to the main body ECU. Then, the main body ECU sends these request signals to the lock motors in each door to lock/unlock all the doors at once in response to the inputs. Operating the driver's door lock using a mechanical key sends lock/unlock request signals to the main body ECU via the master switch. "2-step unlock function" is optional for the key-linked lock on the driver side door.

Front Door Lock Motor
Motor locks/unlocks door
Built-in door key lock and unlock switch (key-linked) detects door key operation's door status (locked or unlocked) and outputs data to main body ECU
Built-in detection switch detects door status (locked or unlocked) and outputs data to main body ECU This switch turns off when door is locked and turns on when door is unlocked

Guess the last thing you want to happen is have the battery die. I'm not a fan of no mechanical backup but there it is.

it is mechanical, if you unlock it physically with the key in the driver door it will open, the electrical and wireless are for when you unlock it with the button or physically turn they key twice inside the driver door to lock or unlock all 4 doors.
