Just purchased a K&N drop in filter (sport or whatever), for around $48. I gotta say, the first day driving it after installation, I could feel a slight increase in HP (not much, but noticeable). Also, I noticed a fairly large jump in MPG. Almost 5-7 MPG more. I like it too, because when you need to, you wash it, and let it dry, and put it back in. They recommend every 50,000 miles to wash it (highway driving), but I'll probably do it every 10,000 or so.

I recommend getting it if you're looking for nothing major to do to your engine but give it a little more help. it's part number 33-2360, and i think is worth it!

Interesting, for the MPG gain def worth it. I should try this!

That increase in MPG seems high but with price of gas these days I’ll take any gain I can get. I have not read this entire article but it raises some interesting questions.

I'm not sure what to believe.

i got the trd version of the drop in and did not notice a difference but i did replace it when the car was new. I like the fact that its cleanable. I wonder who makes the TRD's as its gold color vs k&n red. Possibly AFE..

I also plan to clean mine every 10k.

I have had mine for 2 yrs plus. Probably the best 50$ i have ever spent on my car. I clean it every oil change.

tried doing the spectre filter and didnt like the noise + loss of torque i got. just put the stock box with this filter in and away she went.

i do 90% city and 10% highway , and it's always 230~250 Miles for FULL TANK... it's really low.. can you please show me how to increase MPG , it's always 23 on the dash and my tyres are all 30 PSI

where can i buy the K&N drop in filter

i got mine at autozone (they had to order it), and currently my tires are at 36 PSI. i get average 32mpg on my dash

Hrmn, lately I've noticed a drop of about 2-3 mpg over, oh about the last 6 months. I've been wondering if it was time for a new air filter. I used to get about 30-32 mpg on the dash, now I've been getting 27-28 mpg. The air filter in it is the one it came with when I purchased it September '08 *cringe*. Me thinks a trip to Autozone is in order this weekend.

wow ive done the spectre intake plus an axle back exhaust and i get no lower than 33mpg actually calculated and i _____foot around either. most of my driving is city but when i do all highway i get closer to 40mpg + doing about 60-65 and if im doing 70 + i normally get atleast 35mpg. before i would be lucky if i could pull 34mpg.

i dont have an axle-back, so perhaps that is a good contributer?

I've compared dash mileage to calculated mileage and it's generally 15-20% wrong. I always calculate mileage. I drive not super aggressive but I don't drive like an old man either. I'm currently getting 35-38MPG with stock air filter and tires at 35psi.

I used to get 32-35 MPG highway (90% of my driving is 100+ round trip to work everyday on PA turnpike). Then it dropped to like 27 MPG... it's back up to about 33 MPG (first tank used after installing) plus i can tell a slight HP difference. Tires... whatever the shop keeps them at when i get them rotated every oil change (approx. 5500-6000 miles). I love this new filter... best $48 i spent... i got it at advanced (no one keeps it in stock, they all have to special order it from warehouse.)

Hmmmm.... This is tempting. I will be replacing the air filter again at my next oil change (60,000 miles). I was thinking about an AFE intake. I wouldn't mind a few extra ponies for towing. And a few extra MPGs wouldn't hurt, either. Of course, the drop in K&N would be a lot cheaper... but one would assume that it is less effective, too.

What to do....

i did some research on K&N drop in filters, and some say it lets in more air & dirt and it's not good for long run..? true?

If you read the link from my post it does not make K&N look good. However, if they were responsible for causing engine failures I doubt they would be in business as long as they have been. Again with the price of gas continuing to rise I’m seriously looking at this mod.I just have to decide if I'll change the filter or the whole intake.

Increasing MPG may have more to do with the driver behind the wheel rather than the actual vehicle in question (assuming that the vehicle has been properly maintained). You're driving habits may be what lowers your MPG, I'm pretty sure there are alot of guides out there to save gas, while saving gas is important, I think actually following all of them is sort of ridiculous.

So this filter is literally just a drop in? No ghetto rigging necessary right? I was thinking about this mod but I remember some K&N filters needing a cleaning kit to clean it? Either way thanks for the heads up! :icon_biggrin:

Intstalled my kandn drop in right after the initial purchase, almost 3 years ago! Clean it every 10k, no problems.

Power and MPG improvement is barely noticeable. But it is a lifetime air filter, so it is definitely worth it.

Our air intake system looks pretty straight forward so the difference between a K&N drop in and CAI is probably small. The cheapest intake for our cars at the moment is made by DC Sports which comes in around $200 so the car owners has to decide if an intake is worth 4x the cost of a drop in K&N and the extra time needed to install.

Yes, you buy the filter, take out the white toyota (probably black by the time you get to it) air filter piece of cotton, and put this baby in in it's place. It's washable down the road, and has a "limited lifetime warranty".

Basically, they suggest 50,000 miles to wash it, let dry, then put it back in.
