Default Drat! Auto door lock/unlock only for 09 and newer xDs?

I was checking out the Scion web site's new look and visited the xD section. It promptly went into a description of how to program the car to automatically lock the doors when shifted out of park or at a low speed (your choice). It goes on to describe how to activate an automatic unlock feature as well.

This does not appear to work on my 2008. Anyone have luck with this on your 2008? If not, perhaps a software update to the ECU by the dealer will add the functionality.

Essentially:

To activate automatic locks when you shift out of Park:

1. Enter car, close doors
2. deploy parking brake
3. turn ignition to ON
4. Put shifter in Park
5. Press and hold the driver's lock button for 5 seconds

To activate automatic locks at a low speed (12mph I think)

1. Enter car, close doors
2. deploy parking brake
3. turn ignition to ON
4. Put shifter in Neutral
5. Press and hold the driver's lock button for 5 seconds

My wifes truck has this feature, a real pain in the butt when you have someone in the back seat and are dropping them off, have to have truck in park to get doors unlocked. I like the auto feature on the headlights of our truck, with the switch in auto, the headlights come on when the car is put in gear, great feature.

I'm with you robbie... my Dad's civic hybrid has this feature and it drove me batty when I was riding in his car last week.

That said, I'm no real help here to GeoUSA... I imagine this would be a good feature if you have young kids.

I once experienced an attempted car-jacking. My car had auto locked the doors and I was thankful. If the xD behaves like my Sonata (where I had the lock engage at a slow speed instead of when shifting out of Park), it's possible to unlock the doors without putting the car in Park.

To set Auto unlock, you follow the first set of steps above but hold down the Unlock driver's button for five seconds.
Well, there you go. I wonder how it works with a 5 speed manual.

That's a really nice feature. I guess the 2009 xD had to have something new.

I do usually lock my doors when I drive anyway.

Aw what the f'k? This was reported for the 08s but then was promptly removed from Scion's site. So... I hope this isn't true since I would LOVE to have this feature. Even though I do lock the doors when I get in and start driving, it would be nice to have this feature.

Do you actually think going to the dealership and asking for a software update to the ECU will add this functionality to 08s? I know nothing of the ECU

I installed an aftermarket alarm and gained this functionality...I have no idea if you'd be able to go to the dealer and ask if you can get an ECU flash. For some reason, I think it would be either astronomically expensive, or impossible to do.

ECU is the "engine control unit." Having it updated should be a free service. This is sometimes done when you take a car in for service. It's sort of like loading updates on a computer so you have the latest version with patches and fixes. If no one else posts the answer in a week or so, I will call my dealer to ask if the feature can be added to the 08 through the ECU.

I tried it, and it didn't work. Let me know what your dealer says because I'd like to have this feature.

Maybe it would be smarter to contact Scion Corp about this and see if its even possible. I've been to three dealers in my area for other errands and they... didn't have all that knowledge about the xD on the sales floor or in service!

i'm picking up my new 08 xD on wednesday 9/10 and after scouring the xD info on scion.com had assumed it came with the auto door locking since it showed how to program it and everything. i emailed my dealer about it after reading this discussion... i'll let you know what i hear from them.

The ECU should have nothing to do with "autolocking" the doors. Every Toyota I've had the opportunity to work on used a separate control module for autolocking doors and auto-off headlights.

The ECU controls the engine and ONLY the engine.

You may be right, breadbooze. In my previous car, the only way to enable auto door locking as well as the desired time delay was through the ECU. At least the interface port was the same as the one for talking to the ECU.

I was looking at an 2009, and I didn't see anything about this feature. Can you attach a link to where you saw this, GeoUSA?
