Default Extra Key

Is the key for the '09 XD chipped or just a plain flat key?

a micro"chip" inside the key base (or embedded on the key near the base) that the car has to recognize to start.

what you're talking about is the little circuit board with a few buttons on it that do some functions. LOL

Service manager at the local dealership told me there would be a tiny dimple in the key where it meets the head of the key (black plastic part). Mine doesn't have one so it isn't a transponder (chipped) key. My coworkers Nissan key is and it has a tiny dimple the size of a ball point pen tip right where he said it would. I have a 2008 xD.

I bought my 2008 scion XD used and the previous owner had kept the key FOBs and all the books. I ordered 2 keys from ebay and programed one myself. The other one had a toyota emblem on the back and I could not program it for my car. The key FOB that works with our car is FCC ID MOZB41TG. To program it is a sequence of opening, closing the driver door, and inserting and removing the key several times. You'll have to look somewhere for the sequence because I cant remember.
As for them being chipped so you can start your car is false. The key I got when I bought the car was just a blank cut key, no Scion or Toyota symbol. You can go to Wal-Mart buy and have them cut the key, and it should work.

If you buy a legit fob off of ebay I suggest you have the key cut by a locksmith because the key is harder metal than what they sell at Wal-Mart-Home depot-Lowes ect. I had the toyota branded one cut at Wal-Mart and one side lacked any definition. We tried several times (switching sides, making several passes). After it was completely buggered I bought a cheap key from them had them cut it and it worked. I went home and removed the key from the fob used a dremel to cut the cheap key to fit into the fob, and then epoxied it in. It worked to start the car and to manually unlock the doors, but never got the remote to program. Again make sure the key you buy has the scion emblem and the FCC ID if you want the keyless entry. Once I bought the correct key it programmed first try!

I dunno, a buddy of mine takes keys for scions, and for $40 makes you a "fold in" key. It has no chip, and works fine. he takes your guts from your key, and transfers them to the new fold in key. it's a really cool item.

Only $40? I think I paid $35 for the push out type key and I had to get the guts out of my old key and into this one by myself... took like 2 hours

I have an 09 also and my key is definetly not chipped. I had an aftermarket remote start installed and no key was needed to be hidden in the dash to let the car start. I got to keep my spare key to use as a spare key lol.

If the 2008+ models are similar to the 2008 model, you can get a spare key for $1.84 @ Home Depot. My 2008 xD wasn't chipped and out of two spares, one worked flawlessly. I'll probably just take the one that didn't work back tomorrow.

I'm thinking about getting the uncut key fob from ebay, but I don't know for sure if it'll be programmable, assuming if its not compatible. Does anyone know where I could get one with a remote for < 60$? thanks!
