did you guys get the new mail flyer sent out saying that scion is starting with the 2010 xD's and going forward with 0w-20 synthetic oil.

it also states that with this new oil, the ranges of the oil changes have gone up from 5,000/6 month to 10,000 miles/1 year!!!

that'd be great news!!!

Yeah... well, that's what the update is about. A lot of car companies are going to synthetic in order to extend OCIs. I've been using 0w20 synthetic in my '09 xD since 3,000 miles, and the oil analysis I get done at every change looks very promising. My last OCI was 10,000 miles, and the lab recommended going to 12,000 next time.

Only by American standards... we're far behind Europe. My VW Golf had a 10,000 mile OCI, and only because they didn't offer the extended service interval in the US market. Extended service interval allowed 10,000 to 25,000 mile oil change intervals. My Sprinter van has the Mercedes ASSYST system that monitors oil (including the pH of the oil) and allows 10,000 to 20,000 mile intervals. It usually tells me to change the oil around 15,000 miles. That engine sees some real abuse, too... since it is only a 2.7 liter engine pushing around about 8,500 pounds of van.

Oil and car companies have figured out that they can keep Americans in the dark when it comes to oil and OCIs. Most of the oils labeled "synthetic" on the shelves here don't even qualify as synthetic in Europe. Companies such as Jiffy Lube still promote the 3,000 mile OCI, even though it is a thing of the past.

Nice, I have one free oil change left at my dealership...after that I'm switching to synthetic.

I just sent off a sample with 15,000 on the oil, I also left the oil in the car. It won't get changed until at least 17,000 miles unless the analisys comes back saying to change it sooner.

Agreed, and a well thought out and researched post.

You might want to add that if you are going to go with the extended service with synthetic, you might want to change the filter only at somewhere around the half way point, say around 7500 miles.

Although I have seen very little breakdown of synthetic oil with extended drain intervals, I really have seen no information on what it does to the filter.

I think it's better to err on the side of caution and change the filter at least once in between oil changes.
