Car runs normally but check engine and VSC lights are on. I cant read the codes, the obd2 reader errors out. Im thinking the ecm is bad? When i clear the lights by disconnecting the battery they come back on after a couple hours of driving. The gas cap is tight.
The car previously has had a no start problem that rectified itself before i could diagnose it. When that happened there was no warning lights or codes. This little POS car only has 75k miles. If you have one and plan on keeping it i hope you have an extended warranty.

 

Did you check the battery voltage? Even though it starts and seems fine.. this car and others using electric PS systems need to have a strong battery.
My son just had an issue with his rav4 where random dash lights came on, no valid codes... Turns out his battery wasnt taking a full charge. He replaced the battery and all seems well again.. make sure battery connections are tight as well as ground connections.. and do a load test on the system..

 

Thanks mike. I was able to pull the codes using a different reader and they are all emission related. There are five different codes. They are p2402 p2419 p2401 p043e and p043f . A quick google shows that these 5 codes are common On the xa, xb, xd, tc, corolla and yaris for a bad vapor canister / vacuum switch ( oem replacements came as a unit) and when the dealer does the repair they replace the Vapor filter as well. About $650.00 worth of parts. Hard to imagine all three parts are bad.
I see that the only emission equipment that is covered for 8/80k under the warranty is the ecm and the cat. For all other emission parts, coverage expired at 3/36k. This car has the extended powertrain warranty which is 7/100k but it looks like it only covers the engine and trans.

Some 2007 model year Yaris Liftback vehicles may exhibit M.I.L. “ON” with DTCs P043E, P043F, P2401, P2402, and P2419 stored. The fuel tank filler pipe cover holder has been improved to prevent water intrusion into the Key Off EVAP pump module.

1. Using TIS techstream, check for Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs).
If DTCs P043E, P043F, P2401, P2402, and P2419 are ALL present, refer to the
Technical Information System (TIS), 2007 model year Yaris Repair Manual,
Engine/Hybrid System – Engine Control – “1NZ–FE Engine Control System: SFI
System: P043E: Evaporative Emission System Reference Orifice Clog Up”.

2. Replace the charcoal canister, charcoal canister filter, fuel tank filler pipe cover, and the fuel tank filler pipe cover holder if water IS or WAS present in the EVAP system.

3. Using TIS techstream, clear all DTCs.

4. Perform the Automatic EVAP System Check and verify that NO pending DTCs set.

 

The way toyota fixes these is to replace the vapor canister, charcoal filter, and the vapor switching valve. I believe the vsv is only replaced because it comes included, bolted to the vapor canister as one assembly from toyota. The canister is $515.00 aftermarket and the filter is about $50.00. There is also a purge switch in the engine compartment which is about $50.00.
You can get a used canister for about $75.00 from a wrecking yard.

Good afternoon all, I recently bought a used xD from a local dealer in Natick, MA, purchased on 1/7/14. Mileage when I bought it was 83,542. I've had the car for 42 days. Current mileage is 85, 314 so I've put about 1770 miles on it already. Changed the oil myself when I got it because according to the Carfax report they gave me for the vehicle, oil had not been changed since it was delivered to the dealer on 7/9/13.

No problems until a week ago. I saw the "maint reqd" light first. Did all the easy checks (fuel cap). No go. Today, I see the "check engine" light and VSC light illuminated. Starts and runs OK. I may have been sold a bad car by the dealer and I will deal with them.

Question: Is it safe to drive without further damaging the vehicle?

Any help offered much appreciated. I never even heard of this car before I found this one, and it was an economical, sub-compact, 5-spd manual- I love it!

I can easily find a place to get code readings - what are the chances I'm gonna be shelling out big money to fix this?

 

Vsc is vehicle stability control, but I would worry about the check engine light. Have someone with an obd II scanner check out your car. Maybe even see what your dealer will do to help you out.
The maintenance required light is a reminder to do maintenance, and can be turned off by a sequence found in your manual.

 

Thanks Nateson for your help. The car is a little less responsive in handling with VSC off but nothing unmanageable. I will have my mechanic pull codes from it tomorrow.

Will the engine or anything else be damaged by driving with the check engine and VLC lights illuminated?

 

I have no idea because I don't know what codes are making the check engine light come on. I would try not to use it until you find out what's going on with it. You don't want to make things worse. Be safe
