The reason the score is so low is because the side airbags failed on the test run. This is one reason why Toyota is so mad, because of a fluke their vehicle received a poor score. I hate to say it but sometimes air bags just don't deploy for whatever reason, I see it all the time at accident scenes.

I think they deployed, but hey, we're not in Europe, the xD got a better rating, and I think it's one of the best cars in the market right now. Perhaps this will teach us, xD drivers, to drive more carefully, pay attention to the road instead of using cellphones, and only concentrate on driving the car!
