No the Corollas have always seemed to be overrated. My 03 Corolla used to only get 26-28 mpg when it was rated at 28-33 mpg. I'm getting 32 easy on my xD with that same rating.

Try to get gas from Exxon, they do not add ethanol to their gas, which hurts your gas mileage.

The xD is geared to be a little more aggressive. It's louder, and a little quicker you'll notice.

The Corolla is also much more aero-dynamic, which creates much less resistance. Over 300 miles, the difference in pressure pushing against the xD adds up.

The xD is also HEAVIER than a corolla, believe it or not... by about 100 pounds or so.

I'm in the same boat as you, Yang - I have about 6000 miles on my 5-speed xD, and I get between 24 and 27 mpg driving 30 miles back and forth to work on 2-lane back roads with no traffic, depending how hard I beat it. If I use 91 octane with NO ethanol (Chevvron), drive like a blue-hair, never rev the engine over 3000 rpm, and do a lot of coasting in neutral, I can achive a whopping 28mpg. Oooo...and here's the really good part - if I do all those same things with mostly highway driving at about 70mph, I can then realize tremendously awesome gains all the way up to 28.7 mpg!! Go Figure. WTF??? I even installed a short Ram air filter, and tried a programmed electronic fuel-saver module from voloperformance.com for a couple months, both made absolutely no difference. I have YET to break 29 mpg... Double-WTF...

cylon, out of curiosity how much do your wheels and tires weigh?

a lot of the people who are getting good mileage have either stock, 17" wheels or pretty light 18" wheels. I was consistently getting 29mpg with about a 50/50 mix in an auto then i stuck the mr7's on there and i'm lucky to get more than 26 now.

garage weighed the stock rims and without caps there were right at 40 pounds each so i'm guessing ~40.5 to 41 with the caps. my motegis are 28.5lbs per wheel and the rubber comes in at 25.7lbs per tire so i'm running nearly 14lbs more per wheel of rotational mass.

i've heard that an additional 7lbs per wheel can make a 3mpg difference but that's about what i'm seeing with double that weight but i'm seeing a difference none the less.

how was your fuel consumption before you put the 18's on?

last but not least i've read before in the toyota truck forums that there's some kind of trick you can do to the ECU that has been proven to cause 10-15% better gas mileage - i'd have to look it up again. maybe we're the unlucky few who just need to reset the ecu?

My mileage was pretty much the same with the stock wheels as it is now with the new 18" wheels, it hasn't seemed to make any difference. I put my 18" wheels on at 4000 miles, so I had more than a dozen fillups to check my mileage with the stockies, and I have calculated my mileage with every tankful of gas since I bought the xD... as a matter of fact, my best mileage of 28.7 was with the 18" wheels, and my worst mileage of 24.1 was with the stockies... Oh well, that's still WAY better than the 9.5 mpg I get with my Dodge Ram, lol!

Why would you be getting 24? you should be getting 34. I would freak out if I was that low.

1.You shouldn't use premium fuel in an xD. You should use the manufacturers suggested fuel. The xD was designed to receive optimum fuel economy and performance from 87 Octane. It is a myth that driving a higher octane will improve performance or fuel economy of an econo-box.

2. There is no such thing as a fuel-saver module. If there was a way to increase fuel economy and performance by 15%, Toyota would shell out everything to make that standard. These companies that advertise these modules can't back up the claims with EPA tested confirmed results. The EPA has tested and confirmed that all modules that make these claims make less than a .1 mpg difference per tank, and in some cases, increased fuel consumption by up to 20%.

If you're consciously conserving fuel you need to be over 32 MPG. If not, switch to 87 Octane, and get rid of the fuel chip.

in my case no - just driving around town and not even raggin' it. worst case is my wife is driving and has to stop at a dang starsux drive through but other than that i actually try to be fuel efficient. my car is an auto though and still has less than 1000 miles but it's driving me nuts to the point that i'm even thinking about putting the stock wheels back on it?

i need to find some ethanol free gas!

wow it seems like you all should be getting better gas mileage than me....i consistently get 27-30 mpg in my tc 5spd driving normally...50% city 50% highway. you must be calculating something wrong if you are getting 24-28 mpg driving mostly highway.

just a little weird to me.
